Art Critique Paper 1 Art Critique Paper Shedell Satcher Arts 105 Adolf Mizzell Art Critique Paper 2 The Oxbow painted by Thomas Cole in 1836 is a painting of a landscape. In observing the painting by Cole I notice that there are different types of lines throughout the painting. There’s a flag on a pole in the painting and it has an actual line but when looking at the curves of the landscape they are implied along as ragged, or irregular lines. The landscape has only organic shapes within it there are no geometric shapes in the Oxbow. I can also see the illusion of light on the water and the clouds. The way the painting is arranged you can still see light on the tops of the branches of the trees even through the dark cloud is above it. I think the color is important because the greens and the yellows brings a softness to it. The colors are used in contrast to each other so you see the dark clouds and the dark green of the forest and then you see the brightness of the sky with the yellow of the land it is a good contrast. Art Critique Paper 3 The texture of the painting is implied since it is a painting. The trees look rough and the smooth and flat in some areas. This painting has variety it almost looks like two separate paintings. One half is dark and rough looking the other is bright and smooth it has no unity to me. The balance is asymmetrical because the right and left sides are not same. I see the trees as the emphasis or focal point and clouds and landscape as the subordination. The slant in the trees and land creates a directional path for my eyes on the painting. There are some contrast in the painting from the black clouds and the white clouds to the green trees to the yellow land. The proportion is connected to the color scheme throughout the painting.
