The Other Sister "The Other Sister" is a film about a developmentally delayed woman named Carla Tate who has been extremely sheltered for most of her life, by both her family and her educational system. It discusses how Carla is a highly functioning and compassionate woman, despite her disability. Retarded is the word Carla’s mother used to describe her, the definition of Retarded is a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way. Many believe that there are characteristics for a retarded person like delays in oral language development, deficits in memory skills, difficulty learning social rules, difficulty with problem solving skills, delays in self-help or self-care skills, and lack of social inhibitors. We don't think that by looking at someone you can tell if the person is “retarded”. Physically they look normal but some of their actions may make someone think that a person is retarded or mentally slow. The person who people might look retarded could just be intelligent in a different way then themselves. People sometimes call others retarded when their intelligence is different then what they think is normal. Retarded is a word that many people think is offensive and mean. The Other Sister is a romantic comedy, the characters staring in this film were Carla Tate, who is a slightly mentally challenged young woman. She has a overprotective mother ,Elizabeth and a father. Last, but certainly not least, Daniel, who is Carla’s boyfriend. Carla had spent years of her in a special education program at a private boarding school. This was a very hard decision for her parents to make.Carla’s parents thought that this would be the best thing for Carla, because there would be other children at this school who were also mentally challenged. We think that a “normal” person and a “retarded” person can both do the same things in the exactly same way but
