INTRODUCTION To trace the origin of a phenomenon is a difficult task, especially when a social phenomenon like the “state” is the object of investigation! The state first came into existence for the sake of life but it continued for the sake of good life. The exact time from when state has come into being cannot be specified. It has been in existence from time immemorial. Through the centuries, political thinkers have taken pain to dig out the secrets of the origin and evolution of the state and in absence of adequate historical and anthropological data, have moved on from one idea to the other. Aristotle said that the state exists by nature since man by nature is a political animal and human beings alone have perceptions of good and evil, just and unjust. To quote his words ‘A person who doesn’t feel the need for a state is either an angel or a beast.’ In this project on the nature, origin and evolution of state, the concept of state is discussed in the first few pages. Then a critical study of the nature of state with reference to various schools of thinkers and their theories has been done. The study has gone on to discuss about the different concepts discussed by scholars regarding the origin and evolution of state and is finally concluded with suitable criticism supported by proper reasoning. The objective of the study was to find out the reasonability of concepts given by various renowned thinkers with respect to the state, its nature, origin and evolution. The study was done after thorough research analysis – mainly with the help of secondary data available and is, therefore, basically a theoretical study by nature.
