(Sauberman) Ultimately, due to misjudgments and mistakes the Iroquois Theater burned down, killing a total of 602 people; because of this, stricter theater fire codes were passed. During Christmas vacation a play called Mr. Bluebeard was playing at the Iroquois Theater; and parents took their children to see it. At the beginning of the second act of the play, a spark from an arc light flared up and caught a drop curtain on fire. At first audience members didn’t think much of the flash of light, thinking it was part of the play. (Taylor) The spark then burst into flames, with the fire expanding rapidly behind the stage.
Dumas stated, “Displaying the hospitality that Iranians so cherish, my father extended a dinner invitation to everyone who called”(321). “As a result, we found ourselves feeding dozens of people every weekend”(Dumas 321). Her mom intended dinner starting on Monday for the next weekend. Since she didn’t drive, her husband took her shopping every Tuesday for all the provisions she needed for the dinner. Availability and freshness of food and herbs determined how long the shopping trip would be.
Anyone that the plague came upon, caused reddening stains on the face and the body would appear, which caused the individual to be thrown in a secluded quarantine factory. This disease appeared in over less than an hour. During this time no one could find the cure for this impeccable disease. As time goes on mass destruction is steady rising in the city. When President Toro heard of this distraught news he was horrified of the mass destruction that was going on.
All of us share a room whose rent is paid by my mom and my sister only, while my check helps bring the bread to our room. We move just about every other month due to huge differences in lifestyles between my family and the people we rent with. Where we move to is not a big deal for me because I am hardly ever home to avoid problems with whomever we live with. Between school, basketball practice, cheer, sports medicine, and my job, I keep myself busy so I only arrive at our room to get some rest at night. These are difficult times and I am aware that there are many more to come.
June 5, 1969 Dear journal, I’ve realized that I’ve not been writing since ’56 ,but that’s because we’ve been having some unpleasant weather. I know Oklahoma is in tornado alley, but there’s not been any tornadoes yet! Sometimes the weather gets so brutal that I take my wife and daughter to the storm shelter anyway. I think I might get my daughter a dog for her birthday on the 15th. Even though our money is based on how many eggs the chickens hatch, I’ll do anything for my daughter because…she’s the only one I have.
He shares personal experiences during the most trying times of his marriage. Bartels talks about a night that his wife and kids were sleeping as he was down stairs finishing the dishes. He goes on to tell about the grill-cleaning project that had been sitting in a basin for several days (437). While rationalizing why he had not completed the task he stated, “It’s unlikely, I was any less harried or less tired the previous few nights as I went about my kitchen duties, a responsibility that has fallen to me more or less exclusively of late. No, my energy level is fairly constant- that is to say depleted- at that particular point of just about any day” (437).
After a month my mom also got job so after that we spent our life with ease but at the same time we were saving money. Next trouble was we all had to stay dependent on ride because of lack of car. We were walking to Wal-Mart and other stores to get grocery. It was hard but we did it also in winter too I still remember that me and my mom were walking 2-3 miles every day from work to house. So probably after one year we got our first used car.
The house was so overwhelmed, and crowded with guns; Sarah had to make room for her bowl of Rice Krispy’s at the kitchen table. Sarah explains in her story that she was eleven when they moved into that Bozeman house. She had never lived in a town like that one before. Sarah and her family used to live in Oklahoma. She describes her old town “a dusty little Muskogee County nowhere called Braggs.”(155) she knew her and the family’s lives had changed one morning during breakfast.
None of the examples I have used are people who are lazy, just sitting at home waiting for the government to fill up their EBT card, and promiscuous, just having more babies with the idea that the government will help take care of them. I myself am a full-time working, part-time student, with no children, who unfortunately lives from paycheck to paycheck and also receives food stamps. An eight-month job search followed by a job at half the person's former pay, an eighteen month search leading to serious depression, and a five year search leading to nothing at all (Ehrenreich, 2014). Job searches in today's economy have become much longer and difficult, where in the past it would merely take a few
