“The Menace of Drug Addiction” Drug is a substance which stimulates the nervous system. It is used as medicine or to intoxicate the senses. Heroin, marijuana, opium, cocaine, hashish and morphine are the major intoxicating drugs. Marijuana and hashish are the flowers and leaves of a plant. Heroin is the refine form of opium which is obtained from poppies. These drugs are chewed, smoked, sniffed or injected in the body. Asia is the major production center of drugs. There are two areas in Asia where drugs are cultivated and produced. One is called the “Golden triangle” which includes Thailand, Laos and Burma. Other area is called the “Golden crescent” which includes the areas of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. Drugs are taken out illegally from the Golden crescent by various agencies, to different countries. From Golden triangle drugs are mainly exported to Australia, Canada and U.S.A. The use of drugs is increasing rapidly in this modern and advanced world, day by day. Innumerable young men and women, teenagers and old people have started taking drugs uncontrollably. Some people take drugs just for pleasure or to get rid from the miseries of the world and some take them out of habit. But eventually they all become addicts. “Habits are first cobwebs, then cables.” Some people take drugs because of poverty and unemployment. Actually they want to escape the bitter, harsh and frustrating realities of life. i-e, miseries, anxieties and tension but eventually they become drug addicts and waste their precious lives. As George William Curts says:- “Happiness first of all lies in health.” Drug addicts can’t earn and support their families so in this way the soul earners of a family are ruined by this menace of drug addiction.
