Cheever uses these literary elements to fully grasp our attention and mislead us into the unexpected end. In H. Porter Abbots book, "The Cambridge Introduction to Narrative," he explains these literary elements; what they are, how to find and point them out, and how they are typically used. In Chapter five of his book he starts explaining conflict and it's significance. He states, "Conflict has been so central a feature of narrative throughout its recorded history that it is reasonable to assume that it serves important cultural purpose" (55). This quote tells us that conflict is really important, becuase without conflict there is no story: "in almost every narrative of any interest, there is conflict...."(55).

He is a teacher, but he is talking about this topic from a different point of view as a director of a writing program. It all makes sense if everybody knows that. Think about it. If he has a job that calls for him to improve writers’ techniques then he is doing just that with this argument and convincing proposal.

A lot of the times when I write I usually have a very good understanding of what I read and write but sometimes I rush and do not go over what I write. As a reader I would take the insight of the author writings and then try to incorporate or compare it to my life to see how I can relate to it. Try to put it in my on perspective in order to have an idea of what theme should be for that paper. Learning about how the theme of your paper should be related back to in every paragraph is important to the flow of the paper.

I considered a good writer to be anyone who could effectively convey a message to a reader. Since going through the first two units, I have learned that good writing is quite a bit more complicated. Author Keith Grant-Davie discussed how important to good writing it was to analyze your subject matter to understand who all of your possible audiences are and who you may be representing when writing your material, and to address all parties appropriately. If an author can do this effectively, I believe that it is a crucial part of becoming a good writer. Unit one also taught me to reevaluate how important certain priorities when it came to writing.
Before you begin anything in writing it is extremely important to brainstorm and write down ideas before beginning a project. For a biography, you might want to pick someone with a lot of information so you have a lot to write about, but at the same time is it too much to write about and will you include all the information? Make a list of people you are fascinated enough to write a biography on and then do a quick research on them. This will give you more insight on who you should write about based on how much information you find on each of them individually. In the end, ask yourself which is most significant to you and do you have enough information to write about.
