The Luck of Roaring Camp by Bret Harte is about the gold rush that happens in 1849. The story tells how life was during that time and the things that the people had to face. In the book we get to see the details of the setting, the characters behavior, and the finale that demonstrates a very important time in history. Bret Harte uses his book to show how the Luck of roaring camp symbolizes the gold rush through the setting, characters, and resolution. ‘’The luck of roaring camp’’ symbolizes the gold rush through its setting. The luck of roaring camp was a mining camp in 1850.It was in the valley between two hills, filled with nature and it was hard to get out. The author shows this by describing the difficulty in getting to the camp and the natural surroundings. According to Bret Harte’s description, ‘’the only outlet was a steep trail over the summit of the hill.’’ He lets the readers know that this trail is the only way in and out of the camp. Climbing the hill is an alone and possibly a treacherous process. Harte is demonstrating the difficulty in getting to California. Emigrants could take one of two ways, over land or by ship, both of which there are risks of disease, stress, and death. Harte uses his description of the camp and describes the setting of the camp in detail to draw upon similarities in the experience of Emigrants in getting to California in the story. Secondly, The luck of roaring camp symbolizes the gold rush through its characters. The author is describing how the characters act and what they do at a mining camp. In the luck of roaring camp there are a lot of men but there was only one woman. Men at the roaring camp mostly spend their time digging for gold, gambling, or fighting.
