Easton Baker Sullivan English 102 February 8, 2012 Love Is All You Need Some people have said that a mother’s love towards her child is the strongest type of love. But do you have to be of the same blood to show this type of love? Not according to the author of “The Years of My Life”, Louise Erdrich. Erdrich uses character, style, tone, and setting to show her thoughts on appreciating love from your family. Erdrich uses character to show that blood relation doesn’t mean love.
She would give her child to servants to hold and never cared for her. When Johanna’s first son was born, she was delighted. Unfortunately for Johanna, her first son died at a young age. Catherine felt resentment towards her brother and did not care for his death. Johanna then pushed insults on Catherine constantly.
She solved the problems that burgomaster gave her, as well as made a game of her marriage with the burgomaster. Finally she outwitted her husband and her husband always consulted her whenever a very difficult case came up. As a woman lived in those times, she conciliated respect with her cleverness. Raimunda is very kind and tolerant. She hated her mother since she thought her mother should respond on that event that her father raped her.
Jackie has a good combination of the all the ingredients a good mother needs. Jackie Flaherty is a mother of two and can be seen as a typical Jersey mom because she is a “bad ass” and she has so much love in her heart that she would do anything for anyone. Kyle is a kid she just met and she agreed to take him in under her roof knowing nothing about him. Jackie even states multiple times that she is going to punch Kyle mom when she gets the chance. This shows the immediate and infinite love that Jackie shows towards people.
They manage to flee together, but ultimately the grandma must kill her beloved dog in order to protect them both. Hood emphasizes the conflicting emotions involved in unconditional love and familial commitments. The grandma shows devotion to her deceased daughter when she tends to her grave. However, she is also reminded of her offspring’s wild and difficult personality now that she is dealing with raising her daughter’s similarly difficult child. Although she greatly loves her dog, she somehow manages to sacrifice him, all to protect the unspoken higher commitments she feels for her daughter and grandchild.
Her psychological trauma begins with the brutality of the way her first daughter was taken away to die. “She was not prepared for what happened last time… Kavita felt her budding joy give away to confusion. She tried to speak, to articulate something from her thoughts swirling in her head” (page 6-7). This quote shows that she was at first happy with the birth of her first child, but her confusion of the moment left her with no response. She could only admire her child and she could not understand why her husband could not see
All I ever wanted, all I ever need from her was to feel and be loved. But I guess she only feels of me, how her mother feels of her, HATE.. A mothers loves is precious, something a person can embrace everytime they feel melancholy or unwanted. A mothers hate is cruel, and when u know and feel deep down in your heart that your mother hates u, you sometimes feel not even god loves you, You feel unloved, and unwanted by people who should love you, but really don't So you're blinded when you find someone who truly loves you... I now know that someone does love me, and his name is GOD, he's loved me all along and I let the hate from my mother blind me of that. He's loved me even when I thought I hated him.., I dont know how I could ever hate the only person who's held love for me since day one.

There are often times that you think your parents don’t love you, but their love will never falter. There is nothing you can do that will make them love you less. They are, after all, the one’s that gave you life. Although your parents may not have planned on having children, the minute they see the face of their child they created together there is an instant love, a love that can not be changed under any circumstance. You may think that after doing something they don’t completely agree with could cause them not to love you or love you less, when in actuality they are not always going to agree with you but will not love you any less.
