Said (1995) explains how this process occurs in the West’s construction of the Orient as exotic. It is important to remember that identities can be experienced and/or applied to others and that what a person feels their ethnic identity is may be different from what another person thinks it is. The family is crucial in creating and reinforcing an individual’s sense of ethnic identity. A family’s surname and first name can portray a sense of ethnic identity, for example the name Gareth Jones suggests a Welsh link. The languages spoken in the family home, the food and clothing selected for children are also important influences.
Identify your marital status: Married or single? Some paperwork asks your “race,” or “ethnicity” such as Caucasian, Black, Asian, Latino, Pacific Islander or other? The concepts of race and ethnicity are often used to describe the same things. “A distinction can be made between the race and ethnicity. Race is nature and ethnicity is nurture; that is, birth characteristics versus cultural heritage” ("What Is the Difference").
Ethnicity is based more on culture such as heritage, nationality, religion, and many other things. We have many ethnic groups in America. I believe that these are designed
Physical differences, such as skin color and hair color, and different cultural distinctions, distinguish racial groups. Ethnic groups are distinguished from dominate groups based on cultural differences. These cultural differences such as; language, different beliefs about marriage and parenting, and different food preferences, differentiate individuals from the minority group, into the ethnic group. Hispanics and Latinos make up a large part of the ethnic group. Religious groups are based on an association with a religion other than the dominate faith is the basis for this minority group.
New customs and attitudes are acquired through contact and communication. Each group of immigrants contributes some of its own cultural traits to the new society. Pluralism is when minority groups completely cooperate in the main society, yet maintain their own traditional differences. Similarities and Differences: Although both assimilation and pluralism both involve embracing the new society traditions and ways of life, assimilation is more about the contribution of different traditions from different cultures while pluralism is about the participation of a mixed society while maintaining personal views and attitudes. Hyphenated America ENG122 Instructor Hyphenated America America is diverse with many different cultural backgrounds and people from many different places; it is what makes the United States so interesting. If your descendants come from different parts of the world being born in the United States does not make you just an “American”, you will be categorized as a hyphenated-American. To many cultures, showing where they come from is a symbol of pride and identity; to others that consider themselves as Americans because they have no knowledge or regards for their heritage, this can be a hassle and even offensive. While some are proud to show their roots and heritage, all American citizens should be known as Americans and nothing more, because being a ‘Hyphenated-American’ makes you subject to stereotyping, it can create animosity between different cultural groups, and some might use it as a discriminator. It can be difficult to eliminate the entire hyphenation off America, but it is something that could be slowly introduced.
Race is defined as a class of people based on physical or biological characteristics, such as skin color, facial features, bone structure, or hair and eye color. Ethnicity is defined as a class of people who share a national origin and culture. Ethnic groups share the same heritage, values, and traditions (blurtit.com). I don’t understand why people feel the need to identify other people by the color of their skin or where they come from. All my life I have heard what I consider to be racial slurs.
They conclude that race is a social, cultural and political concept based largely on superficial appearances. This is why some prefer to use the term ethnicity which denotes cultural rather than biological characteristics. Nationalism is a political ideology that involves a strong identification of a group of individuals with a political entity defined in national terms, e.g. nation. It is usually the belief
Race and ethnicity are hard concepts to define. Race according to our lecture notes refers to not only the physical characteristics of a person but also the mental attributes they possess. Ethnicity refers to selected cultural and sometimes physical characteristics used to classify people into groups or categories; race is broken down into ethnicities. In lecture we discussed physical isolation and the distinctive gene pools that have formed do to outward migration. The professor stated that the development of different racial groups was due to the theory of genetic drift; we all originally started in the same location and spread outward.
Race, Ethnicity, and Families The beginning of this chapter discusses racial-ethnic groups. It suggests that some racial categories are more flexible such as American Indians. It is more difficult to define an ethnic group than it is a racial group. A racial-ethnic group is a group a people who share a common identity and whose members think of themselves as distinct from others by virtue of ancestry, culture, and sometimes physical characteristics. Hispanic refers to a person living in the United States who traces his or her ancestry to Latin America.
