“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” This saying by Mahatma Gandhi illustrates the importance of acquiring good health in order for our bodies and minds to function optimally. In fact, this is one such quote among the rest of the quotes that puts forth the idea that the greatest asset that one can ever gain is good health. Despite much emphasis placed on the importance of good health, statistics still continues to point out on the prevailing accumulation of health issues all around the world. World Health Organization (WHO, 2015) published in their website that between 1980 and 2014, the prevalence of obesity worldwide has doubled. I have a strong preference for certain types of tastes and avoid the rest. I gravitate towards tastes such as sweet and sour. I also, personally, enjoy spicy food. Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Tom Yum Soup and Spicy Fish Soup are some of my favorites to list. Although I am aware of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, I would still choose to consume them in small quantities or not consume them at all. This is largely due to the way I grew up. Since young, most of the fruits and vegetables seemed unappetizing to me. For instance, I avoid tomatoes in my sandwiches for its slimy texture and ladies green finger for its bitter taste. On the contrary, I enjoy consuming cucumbers and capsicums. But it is very seldom that cucumbers and capsicums were cooked at home. As a result, I would generally skip the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables which eventually became a habit for me. Perhaps, I would consume more of the vegetables if they were cooked to enhance their flavors. Moreover, at my current age, I tend to be a lot more adventurous and curious in trying out foods that are labelled as unhealthy as at the back of my mind I would always think that exercises would make me healthy again. I have even come across many elderly instilling fear in me that due to their health condition, they are unable to consume a particular basket of food items. Recently, she had changed her own diet to include a lot healthy food items. Whenever we go out for family meals, she would strictly ban fast food outlets as a choice to consider. Her efforts to stay healthy has definitely created a pressure within me to change my diet routine. Whenever I'm eating in, I would include the cooked vegetables in my meal and would try out one of her healthy drinks made using the NutriBullet. As we grow up, there are more responsibilities to take charge of and time becomes a limiting factor. As such, it is very seldom that we catch up with our friends on a regular basis. Whenever it is possible to catch up, we would plan to meet at fast food outlets such as MacDonald's, KFC or Long John Silvers. It is very convenient to meet at fast food outlets as they are all around Singapore and are easy to access during late nights. Furthermore, as students, we would like to spend minimum amount of money on such meetings so that it allows us to roll around within our allowance.
