Genetic engineering has limitless potential. “Would You Like Blue Eyes With That?” is an article the describes the various things genetic engineering can do like its ability to mutate anything from plants to animal to even humans. A mother can request that her embryo be modified for a variety of different reasons like changing their appearance or for preventing and protecting her child from diseases. Genetic modification can be used in many different ways and is most famously known for its use on food, but it can also be used on a variety of other things like medicine and is also used to mass produce insulin. Organisms have genetic codes that determine what a certain thing looks like and/or acts like. With genetic modification you can…show more content…
Parents can ask to change the gene coding of an embryo thus changing the embryos eye color, hair color, skin color or gender. A team of scientist in China created cloned embryos with genetic modifications so they could correct the DNA to show that they could prevent the disease in early stages of an embryo's development. Genetic modification of embryos is said to cure numerous diseases by editing the genes, for example for genetic blindness they want to inactivate a variant gene in the retinal cell to stop progressive blindness. They have also said that they can cure sickle-cell anemia which affects 100,000 Americans causing life long pain by editing their blood stem cells. Genetically modified food is food that has been chemically changed provide more nutrients, have an overall better appearance and have a longer shelf life. Genetically modified grains are used in meat and dairy products. According to an article I found on the internet the most common genetically modified foods are corn, almost eighty five percent of corn is genetically modified in the United States and soy. It is modified to have a high level of oleic acid which is naturally found in olive oil. Corn and soy are modified so they are resistant to a weed killer known as herbicide…show more content…
It can also do a variety of things and although there are some negative aspects to genetic modification It can do alot of life changing things. The use of genetic modification on embryos to prevent diseases would affect millions of people. Although the thought of genetically modified foods to end world hunger was a good idea, there are still many health risks that need to be addressed and possibly fixed. I personally find genetic modification/engineering very fascinating and believe that in the future it can do amazing
