The Importance of Critical Evaluation in News Media: “With Boston Locked Down, Small Business Steps Up” It is always important to think critically about everything that you learn via news media. In most cases news is created unfairly due to a lack of research, dishonesty, exaggeration and biases. In light of the recent tragedies in Boston I chose to use this article in order to highlight the importance of using critical evaluations of news stories. Many printed sources go through an editorial review process which means that either one person or several people agree that the information is credible before allowing it to be published. I think that Bloomsburg Businessweek did a fair job reporting this news story accurately, with some sufficient depth and breadth. The article highlighted the business’ that made the choice to stay open regardless of conflicting advice. While I found that most facts were reported accurately when compared to other reports I did find that at least one thing was left out. It was included in the article that Dunkin Donuts was among the business’ that remained open during the lockdown, but failed to mention that this was due to a request made by law officials in order to serve those in uniform. It was reported that an estimated $5,000 dollars was lost for one business owner on Friday. I think that this is a very questionable assumption. The article touched on all of the losses these businesses’ faced if forced to stay closed during the lockdown. While the money loss and dents in pride were mentioned, the fact that staying opened could have potentially put many people in danger was left out. In order to properly evaluate a news story one must always make distinctions. By doing so you will be able to create a basis for all claims pertaining to the evaluation.
