The Impact of Characters Through Physical and Emotional Setting

Setting can be described as the physical and emotional atmosphere in which a story takes place. Physical setting is made up of factors such as time and place. Emotional setting, on the other hand, entails the mood of the story, which can include the sense of loneliness or serenity. Short stories use setting to set the tone of the text during which the story takes place and can even affect a character’s persona. In John Steinbeck’s, The Chrysanthemums, and in Roald Dahl’s, The Way up to Heaven, the physical and emotional aspects of the settings impact the main characters from each text. In John Steinbeck’s, The Chrysanthemums, the main character, Elisa, is impacted by the era of when the story takes place. The great depression coincides with the time in which the author writes the story; therefore, his writing reflects the gloominess of the society during that period of time. The author also goes into great detail of the physical environment being somber and cold: “The high gray-flannel fog of winter…”(Steinbeck 1). In the beginning of the story, Elisa is wearing unflattering clothing and a man’s black hat: “Her figure look[s] blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man’s black hat pulled down over her eyes…”(Steinbeck 2). The way Elisa portrays herself is indicative of someone who struggles with low self-esteem. Towards the end of the story, Elisa cleans herself up and changes her appearance drastically: “She put on her newest underclothing and her nicest stockings and the dress which [is] the symbol of her prettiness”(Steinbeck 14). This indicates the change of atmosphere from a lonely to a more positive direction; however, the grey undertones of the era are still depicted: “…willow-line was still yellow with frosted leaves so that under the high grey fog [there seems] a thin band of sunshine”(Steinbeck 15).
