The Ideal Person Valerie Perez REL/133 01-28-13 Firpo Carr The Ideal Person In this essay I will describe what the ideal person through the perspective of Confucius and will include important concepts such as ren, li, shu, xiao, and wen. The reader will gain better knowledge of who Confucius is and how his believes played an important major role in the lives of those who follow him. Confucius Confucius’s name was “Kong Qiu” but, later became known by the title of “Kong Fuzi” meaning “Master Kong.” According to University of Phoenix Experiencing the World’s Religions. Tradition, Challenge, and Change Fifth Edition (2010) Confucius was “born in 551 B.C.E. at a time when China was not a single empire but a group of small kingdoms.” It is said that Confucius’s father died when he was a young child and regardless of their poverty stage, his mother managed to raise him to be an educated gentleman. One of his interests was pursuing a scholarship. In order to help support his mother and his studies, he held a minor government post as a tax collector. His mother passed away when he was in his late teens. Afterwards, he soon fell into a phase of mourning. Once his mourning phase had passed he began his life as a public teacher. Although he was a successful teacher, he always wanted to play an influential part in government. According to University of Phoenix Experiencing the World’s Religions. Tradition, Challenge, and Change Fifth Edition (2010) it states, “For a time (c. 500-496 B.C.E.) he became a government minister.” Confucius married and had a son and a daughter. For fifteen years he lived outside his home state but, moved back to Lu (south of present-day Beijing) where he took ceremonial post as senior advisor and died about “479 B.C.E” (University of Phoenix, 2010). ------------------------------------------------- Top of Form Bottom of Form
