He warned Romeo that “violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, fire and powder, which as they kiss, consume.” (2:6:9-11). Friar Lawrence had a feeling that the quick and hasty decisions that were made would not end well. However, he continued on to marry them, believing that their marriage would stop their parents’ feud. In addition, Friar Lawrence gave Juliet the idea of faking her death and saying, “…take thou this vial, being then in bed…” (4:5:93). He suggested the plan of killing herself, which led to Romeo committing suicide due to the death of Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet go through a series of unfortunate events which ultimately leads to their deaths. The bad luck starts off with Romeo killing Tybalt and getting banished from Verona. After Romeo and Juliet tie the knot a fight breaks out between the Montague’s and Tybalt Capulet. Even though Romeo is filled with love and happiness, he is set off when Tybalt kills Mercutio, so Romeo gets even by killing Tybalt. The usual punishment for murder at that time was death, but Romeo was only banished from the Verona walls.
Romeo finds out she is “dead” and comes to see her. This then leads to both their suicides. This is also evident in Douglas Dupler’s essay when he writes “ In the end, rather than mediating his position of religious authority, the friar devises a secretive plan that goes wrong and leads to the death of the young lovers,” (Dupler 3). It is explained in this essay that Friar Lawrence goes against his beliefs and concocts the plan that then fails. In summary, Friar Lawrence is the one responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths.
This happiness is sharply contrasted to the sadness and anger that takes over, when Balthasar tells Romeo of Juliet’s death. The true tragedy is that the reader knows Friar Lawrence sent a message to Romeo telling him of Juliet’s fake death and that Romeo had not yet received the news. Balthasar’s news results in Romeo immediately buying poison and rushing to Verona with the intent of dying beside Juliet. “A dram of poison; such soon-speeding gear/As will disperse itself through all the veins/That the life-weary taker may fall dead” (5.1, 63-65). It is through all of these errors and mistakes that the plot of Act 5, Scene 1 helps to make Romeo and Juliet a true tragedy.
Romeo, in an act of revenge, kills Tybalt. The Prince, trying to maintain peace, banished Romeo from Verona. The Nurse brought the news to Juliet “Tybalt is gone, and Romeo banished; Romeo that killed him, he is banished” (Romeo and Juliet 2. 2. 69-70 ) This made Juliet miserable over Romeo's banishment, meanwhile her parents thought her unhappiness was over Tybalt's death.
The Black Death The Black Death, known as the Black Plague, or the Bubonic Plague killed one third of the population of Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries. The beginning of this plague set the scene for years suffering. It left the social and economic world in pause. The Black Death became a subject of art, music and folklore and it influenced the mind of the people. The impact of this mass killer caused disorder to the medieval society because of its unknown origin, the unknown causes and preventions, its deathly symptoms and its breakdown of life.
People thought that it was a punishment from God. In the end about ½ of the population died and making it one of the worst bubonic plagues ever in human history. It took the country over 100 years to recover from this disaster. The next event was the peasant’s revolt. This happened in June 1381 and it involved thousands of peasants who gathered and travelled to London to protest about their freedom and the poll tax King Edward III had issued.
Fate also predicted “a pair of star-crossed lovers tak[ing] their live[s].” Out of everyone in the play, fate is at most to blame for Juliet’s death because of it’s unavoidable and destined to happen. In conclusion, Friar Laurence, Nurse, Capulet and Fate
And once Romeo discovered her without knowing she was really alive, he didn’t see much point living without her and ended his life. Shakespeare orchestrated the story and made it that fate would unavoidably kill the two
‘A plague a’ both your houses!’ Shakespeare has used the word plague because plague is a disease that kills people one by one and he used the word to define grudge as something that kills everyone one by one. Shakespeare used this technique; imagery to make act 3 scene 1 exciting and dramatic for the audience because this part of the scene in the whole play, when Mercutio dies which is very significant because Mercutio was Romeo best friend and until now Romeo was calm so after the event we don’t know how Romeo is going react towards Tybalt which increases the tension to the climax because this part of the scene the character Romeo is going to change from calm to violent.
