Lady Macbeth quietly whispers to herself, "... Make thick my blood./ Stop up the access and passage to remorse/ That no compunctions visitings of nature/ Shake fell my purpose, nor keep peace between/ The effect and it. Come to my woman's breasts/ and take the milk for gall..." (Shakespear 1.5.40-45). Lady Macbeth actually asks to become a man because she believes it will complete her and reward her with all the power. Since this request can not come to fruition the next best thing would be her husband come to power and rule the kingdom. Ultimately, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth differ in their drive but Lady Macbeth's asserts herself meaining Macbeth takes a back seat and complete's all of her wishes.
This is because Lennie wanted to touch a soft red dress and the woman called rape. This for-shadows what is to come in the upcoming sections. Due to Lennie snapping Curley's wifes neck, Lennie is to be run out of the ranch. Yet he remembered where to
A place where there is absolute belief in religion and reproduction and where women are forced to cover themselves but at the same time are committing sinful sexual acts such as adultery sounds like a society which is inexplicable. The Handmaid’s Tale portrays a Biblical society named Gilead. The element allusion is used in the Handmaid’s Tale to show how higher officials can pervert the religion to their own benefit. Also the ceremony that takes place between the Commander, Offred and Serena Joy has another Biblical allusion. A part during the ceremony is where the commander sheepishly only reads parts of the Bible, and those parts only emphasize reproduction and childbearing – “It the usual story the usual stories.
He uses symbolism when she is first introduced; “Both men glanced up, for the rectangle of light was cut off.” The reference to the light can suggest that she cuts off the light because she is a negative character, and/or she takes away anything, which is good. The description of Curley’s wife starts with “a girl” that suggests that she appears looking sweet and innocent, childlike even. During the description, the colour red is repeated several times, “rouged lips”, ”her fingernails were red”, “red mules” and “red ostrich feathers”. This is a key thing because usually the colour red means; love, danger, blood, prostitutes – red light district, and passion. Red is also a primary colour in which young children are attracted to, this could explain why Lennie likes her so much; he has a childlike manner.
The punctuation causes a pause which means that the tone is slow. Since the woman is speaking about her new born child, and since she just delivered her child, the pace is slow, and the tone is about love for her new baby. The literal meaning of the second quote, “One cry and I stumble from bed, cow-heavy and floral in my/Victorian nightgown.” (Plath 13-14lns. ), is that the woman was awakened by the baby’s cry. The woman is sleepy, but she stumbles from her bed to check on the baby.
Re-Visioning Women in Angela Carter’s “The Company of Wolves” Angela Carter’s “The Company of Wolves” serves to re-vision the age-old traditions of the fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood, by repurposing it into highly symbolic literary erotica. Newfound sexual suggestions made in this retelling highlight the new meaning of being a woman by means of man’s dual purpose as danger and desire, Little Red’s carnal empowerment, and her poor old Granny’s ultimate state of being. In the original tale, Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red encounters two males, one being her savior, the huntsman, and the other being a threat, the wolf. With no other position to be filled, Little Red furnishes the story as a void, as the domestic woman. Carter’s re-vision combines the man and the wolf literally into one character, the werewolf, and metaphorically by presenting “Little Red” in opposition to both ideas the two individually provided, danger and desire.
Elizabethian time was the Era of superstition to say the least. In the most the common setting, superstition played a factor in civilian’s everyday lives. Elizabethians believed that physically saying “god bless you” following a sneeze would prevent the devil from entering your body when opening your mouth. Other superstitions such as having your shoes on a table, having hold of a peacock feather, passing by a black cat, and spilling table salt or pepper were also considered to be bad luck. Women in the kitchen believed it was unlucky to stir the pot counterclockwise while cooking.
Birth is a gift given to a woman’s body from GOD. It’s purpose is to bring life and add to humanity. The Gilead society forces women to be sexually used by the commanders. The handmaid has no choice but to give birth to the child is she becomes impregnated, and the give the life she carried inside her to a rapist and his wife. Again, The strong rules of the society gives the handmaid no choice but to
1. Brabantio protests the marriage of his daughter, Desdemona, to Othello, claiming Othello used “spells and medicines” to dull her senses so that she would marry “against all rules of nature.” Do you think the real reason for Brabantio’s protest is the color of Othello’s skin? Use brief passages form the play to support your answer. While reading Othello, it was hard not to notice how often Othello was referred to by the other characters using words that could be construed as racist, referring to the dark color of his skin. Brabantio, the father of Desdemona, cannot stand Othello and is absolutely enraged when he finds out that his daughter has been seeing Othello behind his back.
There are a few differences in the dynamics of power between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, as well as Torvald and Nora Helmer, though despite the eras the plays were written in the power seems to predominantly lie in what was then perceived to be the weaker gender; women. With a strong emphasis on social conventions A Doll's House is interesting to analyse in regards to power, with several undertones regarding position, guilt, gender, finance, and power itself. These themes and symbols are not too dissimilar from that of Macbeth, which has similar themes of guilt, masculinity, gender roles, and ambition: however, while A Doll's House themes support a more modern premise - white collar crime, family, divorce - Macbeth's themes revolve around tyrannical
