Rhetorical strategies are employed by writers and refer to the different ways they can include the reader. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is a tragic novel set in 1930’s America during time of great Depression and poverty. It portrays the prejudice and clichéd views of a strained American society. Curly’s wife, a character who is detached from the rest of the world, a heart wrenching symbol of the American dream, trying and failing to break down the boundaries of society. This female represents women in the Depression, the lack of freedom and equality that they held, an equality that may still be held from many women to this day . Steinbeck is addressing the struggle for female existence during this period by leaving Curly's wife as the solitary female of the book, unneeded, and unwanted by the other characters.
The United States was in a crisis due to the extreme decline in birth rates so in desperation to do something about this the Republic of Gilead formed. The goal of this State was based strictly on reproduction and they would take control of woman’s bodies, not allowing them to, read, write, vote, hold property, or even think for themselves. Handmaid’s would be assigned to married couples and there only job was to lie on their back once a month and hope that their owners, the commanders, would make them pregnant. An Inconvenient Truth Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale tells a story of mystery, passion, and lies. The novel is about a handmaid in the Republic of Gilead named Offred (“Of Fred”). The Republic is the totalitarian remains of the United States after the president and members of Congress were assassinated by the architects of Gilead to ultimately gain complete control. Offred and the other handmaids were once regular women leading regular lives, that is, until Gilead. In the time of Gilead, the women were taken from their homes where they were brainwashed by speeches from their “Aunts” who argued that “such a social order ultimately offers the women more respect and safety then the old, pre-Gilead society offered them” (Sparknotes).
The narrative situation is who is telling the story and whose eyes is the story being told through. The person telling the story can be a character involved in the action that has a limited view on what is going on or it can be told by an individual that is outside of the story and knows everything going on. When trying to determine who the speaker of the story is the reader must look at the point of view used, is the narrator a character, how much does the narrator know, are they involved in the story, and does the narrator make their thoughts and opinions
