Throughout the two works, the color red was associated with the temptresses Ethan and Newland fell in love with. When Ethan first spotted Mattie Silver, there was a “cherry coloured ‘fascinator’ about her head”(26) and Ethan loved her instantly, but thoughts of his wife Zeena, a sickly woman waiting for him at home, had caused him to refrain from revealing his true feelings. On the other hand, when Newland had his first chance to reunite with Ellen Olenska, she was draped in a long red dress at the van der Luydens’ dinner party. In both instances, the women were wearing the color red, symbolic of both the passion in the affairs between the two pairs and the danger of their relationships. In Ethan Frome, when Ethan thought about Mattie’s room, he envisioned her red and white quilt
Also, John Proctor is surprisingly sensitive and thoughtful. When he asks his wife if she is saddened he displays concern for her well-being. He wants nothing more than for his dear wife to feel loved and he is willing to do whatever it takes to make her feel that way. He always spoke good about his wife. For example, when Elizabeth was accused of witchcraft, John said, “My wife cannot lie, I have paid much to learn it sir.” (p.111) John Proctor's major flaw was his great pride in his name.
When Newman says, “I probably cried when the bride kissed her parents” and that she is “eating the entrée I checked off months ago” I feel she doesn’t just like weddings but wants one of her own. I believe that these are common feelings for any girl at a wedding, especially those that want their own. Newman claims her reasons for not being married are “all only partly true and shot through with contradiction” (61). A contradiction she has with marriage is what she explains it to be, “marriage is about handing the woman off, like a baton, from her father to her husband” (61). Men are continually thinking about owning the greatest “possessions” (wives, money, etc.)
However, at the end of the story I liked her a bit better. Mandy (Ella’s fairy godmother) summoned Lucinda saying her gifts were terrible. Lucinda obviously disagreed and was willing to prove Mandy wrong. Lucinda said she would spend three months being a squirrel and three months being obedient. After six months she felt terrible.
He is sleeping with another woman, Bertha, and he spends all of her hard-earned money buying her trite gifts. All that keeps her happy is the prospect of going to church and her well-maintained but small house. He comes back in around dawn and steals the covers. It is clear that this is a troubled household and that Delia’s patience with her abusive husband is going to have to have some kind of resolution. In an instance of foreshadowing, she thinking, “Oh well, whatever goes over the Devil’s back, is got to come under his belly”(39) which means that she knows eventually Skyes will get what’s coming to him.
Teacake made her realize what love was all about and it opened her eyes to what love could have been like in her prior marriages with Logan and Joe. Later in the novel Teacake dies. She was grieving over him but “the kiss of his memory made pictures of love and light against the wall. Here was peace. She pulled in her horizon like a great fish-net…so much of life in its meshes!
The author describes Elisa’s feeling as, “Everything goes right down into your fingertips. You watch your fingers work…” (p. 633). Once the tinker had left, Elisa’s mental stimulation and self-fulfillment had left with him too. It is clear that she is unsatisfied with the relationship she has with her husband. Before the headed out for dinner, Elisa started to dress nicer and look for feminine.
Whose War is it Then: Einna Reta was despised in her village because she was a witch, although she was very beautiful. When Hermes saw this gorgeous woman, he just couldn’t resist. He came to her one night with gold, food, and wine. Of course Reta didn’t refuse and Hermes stayed with her all night. Soon word got out that the beautiful witch was with child.
Minerva and Maria Teresa have been released to house arrest; Minerva struggles to adjust to all the stimuli of Mama's house and finds herself overwhelmed. To make money, they start up a specialty business of making children's christening gowns. They are allowed to visit their husbands at La Victoria on Thursdays and to attend church on Sundays. But when she goes out, Minerva feels overwhelmed by all the people wanting to see her and wish her well, since she has become famous. Minerva survives by putting on "that hardest of all performances, being my old self again," though she feels frail.
Torn with what to do, she sought out her mate Edo. Era found him and begged for his love and understanding basking in his warmth she waited for his counsel. Edo looked to his love and saw her pain, and it angered him. The ruler of Fire told his beloved that he would help her be rid of these wretched children. He said he would cleanse her, his beloved in Fire.
