After the turn of the century the world experienced an enormous economic boom due to the large influx of varying technologies. Many of those technologies continue to change the way we see the world, and the ways in which we interact with one another. One of these budding inventions came to light in 2011 when Nevada passed a law permitting the testing of self-driving, or autonomous vehicles, on public roads. Many people celebrated the occasion, while others became hostile due to concerns about the safety of the general public. The event raised a very important question. Should artificial intelligence technologies such as those present in self-driving, or autonomous vehicles be pursued, despite concerns that those technologies may be dangerous to the general public. Over the course of the next quarter I plan to delve into the world of automation and it’s role in public and private transportation. The essay will be comprised of two parts; the first will include the technologies involved with developing driverless cars, and their benefits to consumers in general. The second half of the essay will bring to light the difficulties involved in establishing autonomous vehicles as a standard means of transportation. Obstacles that may prevent this are laws currently in effect, ethical dilemmas, moral obligations, and general safety risks. The first half will extrapolate on three main topics. I will answer questions pertaining to the existence of self driving cars, and the events that led to their existence. Then I will name the main organizations involved in the creation of driverless cars, and research what those companies are doing today. The most important topic I will address regards the current technologies that contribute to self aware transportation. It is vital to understand what those technologies are capable of and if they are advanced enough to sway any
