They both explore the theme of love or rather painful love. the poet revels the link between the two poems’s through a verity of techniques which is done very effectively but also shows the difference between the obsessive love in “Havisham” and the possessive love of “Valentine”. The pain of love is evident from the beginning in both poems. “Carol Ann Duffy” uses the tone in the first couple of stanzas to show the unorthodox nature of the love. “Not a day since then I haven’t whished him dead”-Havisham This is very effective as the aggressive tone shows “Havisham” has been rejected and her love is causing her pain.
Poe’s famous poem, “The Raven,” is about a man’s descent into madness. Whereas, Hawthorne had a family and seemed to enjoy his life, he believed that man had the ability to overcome the very worst of itself. Hawthorne’s, “The Scarlet Letter,” is about one woman over-coming and sticking it to the system. Edgar Allen Poe is seen more as an idealist due to his psychological issues relating to his writings. The realist of the two would be Nathaniel Hawthorne, his intentions for writing was to eliminate degradation and to retain morality.
People are, in theory, all bound to a certain set of natural laws and moral codes and country rules, and part of the Romantic dogma is to break free of these bounds. Shelley 52) he says, further cementing his existence as a Romantic character. Mary Shelley was a self-professed lover of Coleridge, especially his poem, “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner,” so it comes by no surprise that she also has references to his poem “The Eolian Harp,” which is another topic breached by several of the Romantic poets because of its place in classical poetry as well. The poem grants the idea of somewhat of a breeze of inspiration playing on the heart of the subject (Coleridge). Response to “Counting the Mad” When reading the contemporary american poetry anthology I found myself becoming almost lost in one specific poet. Donald Justice, or more specifically, one of his poems,“Counting the Mad” was a poem that was both the most enjoyable work for me to read and at the same time, the most difficult for me to understand, at first. For myself this poem could be compared to a type of riddle due to its ever apparent ambiguity. At the same time, I believe that this poem takes a satirical perspective of mankind. Justice utilizes the sound similar to that of a nursery rhyme to engage his readers.
TO LOVE OR NOT TO LOVE? “The most interesting aspects of texts written in different times is seeing the difference in what people value.” Possibly one of the best known piece of American prose fiction of its time, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, develops an ironic but ultimately pessimistic point of view on the materialistic and superficial society presented in the 1920s which prevented the ideas of pure love. The form of a prose fiction does not have a structure which makes the novel unique. Sonnets from the Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, presents a more idealistic and optimistic view about love and hope. She portrays her personal voice through the use of sonnets, specifically Petrarchan.
Unknown Darkness To write about things nobody likes to talk about or even mention in real life makes Nathaniel Hawthorne a great poet and a famous one at that. Hawthorne wrote so much about the American Colonies and how they lived their lives, he captured the smallest details of that time. Imagine being a writer in those times trying to find things to write about, in some of his poems you can see what a morbid mind he had, and it’s possibly due to his environment. Some of his Ancestors were direct descendants of Puritan judges. Which might have influenced his all famous “Scarlet Letter” and “The Minister’s Black Veil”, both these poems evoke each readers own personal judgments on human nature.

In the beginning, the narrator has hope because he believed that the raven was the one he loved but that hope has turned into anger when the raven kept repeating “Nevermore.” Poe was a master of choosing words that created mood. The scary and weird feeling of this poem makes Poe look like a cheaper! This mysterious poem is among the best-known poems in the national literature. The setting, the symbols of the incredible flow of art and the auditory imagery of the melancholy ideas all make up a different level than classical poetry.
