The Failure of Visbiliity: Heteronormativity in Ellen’s “The Puppy Episode” The normative gaze and heteronormativity have been very prominent frameworks used to portray oppressed or marginalized groups on television. The LGBT community has frequently been one of the groups depicted through this framework. While many would say that the visibility and participation of LGBT characters is a good representation of homosexuality, this is not true. While homosexual characters have provided a jumping off point for the way lesbians and gay men are portrayed on television, it has failed to provide ideological frameworks through which the public can understand its queer characters without stereotype. One example of this is Ellen Morgan’s depiction of her “coming out” experience on the sitcom Ellen. While Ellen Degeneres, who plays Morgan, has been a vanguard in the LGBT community for her real-life efforts in promoting equality and openly addressing the issues of homosexuality, Degeneres only portrays a lesbian character under the confinements of heteronormativity. Through the analysis of “The Puppy Episode,” Ellen’s “coming out” episode, it will be clear to see how the heteronormativity of today’s society has shaped and influenced the way that lesbians are portrayed on television. Ellen Morgan’s “coming out“ on Ellen brings up the topic of the normative gaze through which women see themselves and the expectations society has for women. The audience first encounters the normative gaze when Ellen is talking to Susan, a self-proclaimed lesbian, about her earlier encounter with Richard, Ellen’s college friend who is visiting the city for a few days. Ellen recounts that Richard tried to “make a move on her” but instead she left his room in a quick panic.
