From the advances in cars to phones, computers to video games, it is an ever-changing part of our lives. When the newest product comes out one day, it seems as though it is already obsolete the next week. The majority of today’s society would agree that the technological advances of today have benefited all aspects of our lives. However, the convenience technology has afforded people has negatively affected society’s overall health, with an increase in obesity, as well as an increase of other health related issues. While for some people, it seems like only yesterday when one had to get up off the couch to turn the dial on the television, run across the house to answer a phone, and get up just to see who was knocking at the door. Those unconscious movements were continual bursts of expending energy, and they too, are long gone. Nowadays it seems as though almost everything has a remote; phones are cordless, and even home security has progressed to clicking a preset channel on the television to see who is at the door. Very few actions require a lot of movement on our parts these days, and that is rapidly catching up with the civilized world. We as a whole are consuming more and more calories, but are expending less and less energy because of these changes. The term obesity is more than just being fat. Obesity is broken down into two categories, with the first classification being overweight. Being medically classified as overweight means that a person’s BMI (body mass index) is higher than 25, while being medically classified as obese signifies that a person’s BMI is higher than 30 (Segala 1241).
