Week 7 Assignment 2 Through history women and the GLBT, community has been looked down upon as inferior to men. As time has proven to be a good thing for women especially the last decade because it has been a time of great advancement for women in the workforce and the outlook that society has on them. I think that people in the United States are also becoming more comfortable with the GLBT community. More people are able to express themselves for who they really are and people are becoming more open to the idea of love without limits. I think it is important to look back from where we have come and see the progress that is being made from where we started to where we are today.
The peaceful campaigning of the suffragists’ was a key factor in women receiving the vote. The suffragists’ started the whole route of women gaining the vote; they were the ever moving force behind the movement. However historian Martin Pugh suggests that “Suffragists would probably have done better to have made common cause with all unenfranchised men and women from the start and thereby they might have extended their appeal” because all men had not yet received the vote it was argued that women should not receive the franchise when it was not fully given to all men. However there were other contributing factors leading up to 1918 and women gaining the vote. They include the work of the suffragettes’ who caused chaos and grabbed the spotlight away from the suffragists’ after a group of women decided it was time to make a militant stand.
The film starred Marilyn Monroe as the blonde and Jane Russell as her wise brunette friend. The Encyclopedia of Hair describes Monroe's role as that of "a fragile woman who relied rather on her looks rather than on intelligence - what some people refer to as 'dumb blond'. At the same time, in the film she demonstrates a certain amount of wit regarding her life position expressed in her hit "Diamonds are the girl's best friend". And when her fiancé's father (who initially disliked her but eventually was impressed) asked her why she pretends to be dumb, she answers that men prefer this way.” (Wikipedia) Marilyn Monroe was one of the most famous Celebrities to use her looks to get what she wants. She was not afraid to flaunt herself at men and the media.
Unlike Saudi Arabia today, East Asian women bind their feet to make them appeal more attractive to men. In Western Europe women had more freedom; women were allowed to hold more high ranking positions. They were also able to coerce men into political aqcuistions (some women were heavily involved in politics even though they couldn’t hold office). Anne Boeyln, King Henry VIII second wife was one of the few who actually cared about politics;she was eventually beheaded but her legacy lives on because she was able to make Henry divorce Catherine of Aragon. Western European women were more civilized and were able to voice their thoughts, even though they weren’t able to hold office they were extremely valued in advice on political matters but not matters of war.
Seemingly is the show gender neutral and more, the cast is multicultural and - racial. Women have seemingly been thrust into positions of power and equality with their male counterparts. Actually it’s far from that. While the women on the show possessing superpowers equal to that of their male counterparts, Heroes is far from being shamelessly sexist. Everything seems to be contemporary, where gender issues would not be a problem, but when the viewer should peel back the layers of the show, it would not take long to see that Heroes relies on traditional stereotypes in terms of the gender lines of protection.
NOW explains that their endorsements are intelligent, well-rounded authentic women, but Fazzone wants to know if they are really women who bask in the sex object role, and what are the shows NOW endorses are really about? Felicity was the third-most feminist show in NOW’s “Feminist Primetime Report,” yet the women would do anything for the crush she followed to college. For example, in the show, once a week, Felicity would revolve her life around the same guy. The other shows that were ranked high in NOW were heroines they stated as one’s who “broke out of the sex object role,” but Fazzone explains that instead these “heroines” are empowered only because they’ve decided that what really drives female power is sex. How authentic are these actresses that NOW endorses, Fazzone questions.
The author is indicating that regular, normal people are not publicized. She uses it to prove that people are quick to judge when they see someone. With enumeration, the author uses it to create emphasis on what she is talking about. "More often than not, that woman will be no older than her early 20s, taller, slimmer and more attractive than average, dressed in skimpy clothing" (1). The author is describing what society consider to be attractive and pretty today.
The Age of Female Dominance Audience preface: I chose my audience to be young women, because they are the ones who this really affects. They have their lives ahead of them and they should know what the future may be like for them. I wrote trying to keep in mind that they might not all be intelligent, so I tried to simplify some parts without losing content. The nuclear family, where the man is the bread-winner while the woman stays at home with the kids has become nearly non-existent. Author Hanna Rosin in her article “The End of Men” writes about the rise of women and how quickly it’s becoming a matriarchal society.
These women may not share any particularly close relationship, but develop a sense of solidarity through sharing similar interests, agenda, or worldview. When a reader sees ‘The Face’, it is not because of how beautiful she looks, but the power of millions of other women seeing it and knowing it too. Wolf cites further evidence using magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan (explained during group presentation). By investigating why women, unlike men, can easily succumb to such evils, Wolf provides some answers to this multifaceted issue by illustrating magazines as the only a vital piece of mass media that directly communicates with women, so they are very important to women despite the manipulative and condescending approach for which the advertisers persistently deploy; and consequently, women are also restrained by generations of poor education (ex. Heroine = beauty, but never both beauty and brains) and limited encouragement or opportunity for critical thinking (Ex.
In magazines, the “ideal” body type is always on the cover so teens wont be able to miss it. In the film by Kibourne, she shows an ad with an excessively thin girls sitting down. The caption of that ad said, “The more you subtract, the more you add.” This caption sends the wrong message to these adolescents who look at it. Because they are inexperienced, they take whatever they see into consideration. Like Kilbourne said, they are the prime targets.
