The Effects Of The Media The media has had a big effect on our society. In 1950, only 10% people had televisions and today 99% of homes have a television, exposing children to violence in many ways. Television is filled with glamorization on carrying a gun, women being beaten, child abuse, betrayals, fights, killing and stuff like suicide and unfortunately, children become subjected to this violence. The typical American child will view more than 200,000 acts of violence, including more than 16,000 murders before age 18. Television programs display 812 violent acts per hour; children's programming, particularly cartoons, displays up to 20 violent acts hourly. (AA Committee). The media makes an impact in many ways; it can increase aggressive behavior, have an effect on a child's healthy development and have an effect on what they learn on TV. Media violence can affect a child in many ways. Some researchers believe that media violence can result in aggressive behavior, demonstrating that children act out what they see sometimes leading them to mimicking aggressive behavior. Young children sometimes can’t distinguish fantasy from reality, resulting in children believing that it’s normal to repeat what is seen on television even if it is violence. Bad guys are portrayed as good guys in movies, making them look cool, holding guns and shooting and fighting off their enemies in order to protect themselves, making violence look attractive and cool to do, making some of them role models for children. Kids want to mimic what their hero is doing bad or good, if there role models using violence to protect themselves kids might follow their lead in the everyday life, “monkey see monkey do”. The typical scenario of using violence for a good cause can effect a child in their daily life making them believe that it's ok to use violence to justice what they do is right, copying
