In 1992, Hornocker estimated that at least eighteen adults were living in the park (59). In the United States as a whole, some biologists estimate that there are as many as 50,000 mountain lions, a dramatic increase over the 1969 estimate of 6,500 (Williams 30). For the millions of Americans interested in the preservation of animal species, this is good news, but unfortunately the increase has led to a number of violent encounters between human and lion. A clear transition prepares readers for the next section. Short title given in parentheses because the work has no
It would interfere with millions of migratory birds that feed on its tundra plains. It would kill plants and animals that are native to the Beaufort Sea area and the environment would take two decades to recover. If there were a major oil spill, it would decades for the ecosystem to recover, since so many organisms would be contaminated and eventually die. Remember the 1989 catastrophe when the Exxon Valdez spilled 35 million gallons into Prince William Sound? The

A survey financed by the Countryside Alliance showed that in spite of control, 30% of farmers had experienced significant losses from foxes in the preceding twelve months. This figure is supported by the research of an eminent Oxford biologist, Dr David Macdonald, who also found out that the percentage of farmers believing that foxes should be controlled varied between 82.2% in the Midlands and 96.2% in the sheep rearing districts of Exmoor. However I do not think that foxes are pests at all as most of the fox’s feeding habitats are not detrimental to farming – on the contrary, their main prey are rabbits, rats and voles, all of which are considerable pests in the 70% of farmlands given to arable production, so on one hand foxes can be benefit to the farmer. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, predation on lambs by foxes is ‘insignificant’. Studies show that even by farmers’ estimates, only one in two hundred lambs fall victim to a fox, whereas between 10% and 24% of lambs die from hypothermia, malnutrition or disease or are still-born.
Development of infrastructure plays the main role in environmental devastation. “From 1985 to 2010 the number of hotel rooms has been forecasted to double from 65thousands to 132thousands and 2” (Lukasz Darowski et al. 1). The materials and energy required for this development has a huge impact on the environment. According to a biologist Hawaii survey done by Bishop Museum around 60% species are already endangered.
Samples were taken from approximately 140 sites and 15 watersheds of various sizes. Below is a map showing a few highlights of the program. Environment Canada shows statistics from this program showing that in British Columbia 63/85 areas sampled were contaminated with pesticides that is 74% and in Ontario 61/77 areas sampled
Renewing the natural ecosystem for a healthier food chain 11 CONCLUSION 14 APPENDIX 15 REFERENCES 16 INTRODUCTION In Vietnam, during the period of 1961-1971, American army sprayed more than 80 million liters of toxic chemical substances, most of which were Agent Orange which contained about 400 kilograms of dioxin. This weapon of mass destruction has caused great suffering to countless families and left serious consequences on the natural environment and generations of Vietnamese. For the time being, it is estimated that there have been 4.8 million Vietnamese people victimized by Agent Orange/dioxin. They reside mainly along the Trail of Truong Son and in areas bordering Cambodia. Tens of thousands of them have died.
With the climate changes many plants and animals are having to relocate or are dying because they are not fit for the changes in their surroundings. We created the Clean Air Act mandating cleaner gasoline for cars and trucks and stricter rules on power plant emissions. Thanks to this act the amount of mercury emitted into the air has been greatly reduced from 246 tons in 1990 to 61 tons in 2008. In the 1990s, the amount of NOx emissions into the atmosphere declined from 26 million tons in 1990 to about 17 million tons in 2008. The SO2 reductions during that time went from 23 million tons to 10 million tons a year.
Another threat as previously mentioned is from humankind. Activities such as hunting are escalating the extinction of birds because they are used as target
How can we prioritise species for conservation? Species becoming extinct: Species are facing various problems key to their survival such as destruction of animal habitats, damage to the natural environment of living things, for example trees are cut down to build homes, , Oil spills, acid rain and water pollution also add to the destruction of habitats. Moreover another cause for extinction is when animals are over-hunted for their meat, fur and other valuable parts. Another cause could be ‘when animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes introduce diseases that the native species can't fight. These "exotic" species can also prey on the native species’.
