Although steroids may improve performance, they will continue to harm athletes and ruin sports as we know it if restrictions are not more strictly enforced. Anabolic steroids are being abused in many different ways such as orally, injection, or by a gel or cream in order to improve athletes’ performances. In today’s society, professional athletes are using anabolic steroids to gain an advantage against their opponents, and the young children that idolize them are in turn also abusing steroids. What all these athletes do not understand is the harm that abusing steroids are doing to them. The question was simple, “Have you ever thought of using steroids for your benefit in your sport?” Of the 20 athletes that I asked, ages 16-20, a startling 11 athletes admitted to considering steroids. The only reason those athletes that took part in this survey said that they didn’t end up using steroids is because they could not find a steady supplier. This small poll opened my eyes to see how big the problem of steroid abuse really is. But this drug is ruining the game just as fast as it is ruing people’s lives. It’s being abused in many ways because in today’s world, you need to be the biggest, the strongest, and the fastest in order to be the best. Steroids give athletes an easy way to do that. Professional’s use it, and it rains down through college athletes, who only want to become professionals, and all the way down to youth athletes, who only want to be like their idols. What all these athletes are overlooking is the serious harm that it can do to your body, inside and out. In order to prevent people from inflicting harm on themselves, we need to implement random drug tests from high school and up, all year round. We need to make sure the punishment for using steroids is severe and unforgiving. And we need to educate our athletes about steroids and not just the positives that result from it, but the overbearing negatives that outweigh it.
