LITERATURE REVIEW OF SURVEY RESEARCH STUDY My topic is on facebook and what effects it has on society. Currently students are growing up with the internet as a lifestyle. Most college students have had access to their own personal computers in their homes before they came to college. Some even bought laptops of their own in high school before even thinking about what college they were going to attend. Also those who grew up before the current generation of college students are becoming more and more involved in social networking, especially Facebook. In the coming of age where Facebook is a necessity to understanding technology, students dominate the majority of Facebook. Although there are more and more older people joining Facebook as well on a daily basis, this is mainly as a result of wanting to know what is going on with the younger generation. “Research has been preoccupied with the search for evidence of negative effects; and much of it has been based on implicitly behaviorist assumptions” (Mcmillian and Morrison 2006, quoting Buckingham 2002). Growing up with the internet has impacted perceptions and factors of socialization in regards to one’s self, family and community. Facebook was released in 2004 to college students at Harvard, but has now spread to not only college students…but the world. Facebook has become a social norm in everyday life, not only by students but by adults as well. The technology of facebook is growing each and every day because society states that you are not normal if you do not use Facebook. “It’s become a veritable rite of passage into the cool adult world” (Boyd 2007). Before the last two years, Facebook has been mainly used by students, but now it has come to include professors, parents and even grandparents.
