ʺI do not want my name to mean a story about being kind and helpful. I want my name to mean meʺ (Haddon p. 16). In order for a name to mean ʺmeʺ, a person needs to know who ʺmeʺ is. Too many people in this world do not believe in themselves. They spend so much of their time being someone else that they can never become themselves. When people become and conquer themselves they become a hero. For most people, a hero is someone who saved the life of another, or someone that made a big difference in the world. Mark Haddon, the author of The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-time, proves that this is not always the case. He uses the novel as a mirror; to reveal and reflect back how we treat others, as well as open our eyes to see ourselves more honestly. The hero in his novel is a fifteen-year-old boy named Christopher Boone; who has Asperger’s Syndrome. He did not jump off any buildings to save anyone’s life. He was simply called to adventure like everyone else, and in the end, her conquered himself. It was not the challenges and tests that made him succeed; although there were many. It was his own courage, determination, and honesty that helped him through the ultimate battle. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, or pain without fear. Everybody, at many points in their lives, faces difficulty, danger, or pain, but not everyone has the quality of mind that enables them to face it without fear. Christopher showed courage in many ways throughout the novel. When he found Wellington, a neighbourhood dog, dead in the front yard, Christopher spend time ʺdetectingʺ, or talking to people on his street. This was a difficulty for him, because he did not enjoy talking to people he had never met before. To him, people were hard to understand (Haddon p. 34).
