With the knowledge that this innocent man would then be accused of witchcraft as well, the courageous Giles refuses to reveal this innocent man’s name. This direct defiance of the court took great courage, but lead to an accusation against him. He sacrificed himself for another, and there is no greater sacrifice. Believing that he would not get a fair trial, Giles decides to not plead “aye” or “nay” against the charges brought before him. He did this so that his land could be passed to his children, but the way they make accused individuals plead is by placing large rocks upon them until they plead.
Once he has put them around all of their necks, he walks over to Reverend Hale and pulls the lever beside him. The girls have now been hanged and are now dead as a result of witchcraft. I would then go back to the line ‘Abby, we’ve got to tell. Witchery’s a hangin’ error, a hangin’ like they done in Boston two year ago! We must tell the truth, Abby!
It takes courage to go out in front of people and do something you know you won't succeed in right away. Homer Hickam had so much courage to try and fail again and again. That's what made him prevail in the end, when he won the scholarship. He also had courage when he stood up to his father, and when he said he didn't want to work in the mine. Homer knew that his father, John would get angry with him if he stood up to him, but he still had the courage to do that.
In ‘The Crucible,’ the protagonist Abigail Williams manipulates her friends and the entire town of Salem, when she accuses innocent people of being witches, in a personal vendetta against Elizabeth Proctor, the wife of John Proctor, whom she had a previous affair with. The hysteria of the witch hunt in Salem is a result of Abigail’s selfish and vengeful behaviour, which leads nineteen innocent people to the gallows. “My name is good in the village! Elizabeth Proctor is an envious, gossipy liar!” Salem is oblivious to Abigail’s true vindictive nature and vengeance. ‘I beg you, sir, I beg you-see her for what she is.’ This statement by John Proctor reveals that he is only one of the very few, who is able to see the truth behind Abigail’s façade, however, her public persona of being an innocent young girl, possessed by the ‘devil’, that she so cunningly portrays was too strong and no one would have suspected she was capable of such lies and
Those beliefs lead innocent people to death. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown” is an entertaining fictional story about witches, devils, history, faith and family and has a link with the people involved in Witch Trails of 1692, in Salem Village, Massachusetts. To begin with Young Goodman Brown leaves his newly wed wife Faith and heads into the forest. He looks around, afraid of what might
When he could just simply stand up for what he believes in like John does. Reverend Hale believes the girls are liars but never tries to prove it or put an end to the trials. That is why he isn’t this stories tragic hero. When at the same time John risks everything to tell the truth, yes what John did with Abigail was adultery, which is in the Ten Commandments. But God does believe in forgiveness of your sins and his truth was his forgiveness.
John will not confess and he is hanged for his refusal to publicly admit to conspiring to witchcraft. Because of his affair with Abigail Williams John Proctor is wrongfully hanged. John felt too ashamed about his affair to immediately go to the court and testify against Abigail. John is forced to chose to blacken his good name or to be hanged for a crime he never committed. John chooses to die a courageous death instead of tell lies.
And a good example of that lesson would be the character Boo Radley. Nearing the end of the book when Boo Radley saved Jem Finch from Bob Ewell, after the ordeal was over the sheriff decided not to include Boo Radley in the report of what happened. Boo Radley does not like being in the lime light so it wouldn't be fair to him to expose him to everybody in town for the good deed he did and get unwelcome notoriety. So out of respect for Boo Radley, Heck Tate, the sheriff, left Boo Radley out of the descriptions of the case so that he wouldn't be bombarded by people and that he could continue to live his life in seclusion and
How Macbeth Becomes Evil William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth shows how a person is not born evil but rather becomes evil through various influences in one’s life. At the beginning Macbeth is an honorable and trustworthy man who is also a war hero with absolutely no intention of harming anybody. However, upon stumbling on a fascinating prophecy that predicts he will be king, Macbeth has no choice but to sit there and go over what happened in his head and try to make a decision. As the witches come back with more prophecies, all of his doubt is gone, and without knowing it he is following the fate that he has created. The witches’ prophecies make Macbeth think he is following fate when in fact the many murders committed by Macbeth
John was one of the few people that stood up for what he believed in. He didn’t like Reverend Parris’ sermons, so he didn’t go to church but once a month. He believed the girls were lying, so he started a commotion to prove them wrong. John Proctor was still not the most moral individual, however. It’d take a lot of nerve to be lusting over a young girl, Abigail Williams, while she’s living in your home, doing work for your family.
