489 lines (161-163). That was a line in the book Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare. That quote was said by Romeo in the very beginning of the book because he is so love sick over this girl named Rosaline. Throughout the book Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet’s perspective on love changes along with their personalities. As I said before in the beginning of the book Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is gloomy and feeling hopeless about love because Rosaline (the women he “loves”) is not going to get married.
The only reason why both families object to Romeo and Juliet being together is because of a family feud that has been going on for decades if not centuries (Basingstoke, pg 5). Pride and Prejudice gives us a peek into the strange dynamics of human relationships. This story presents people in love whose pride and prejudice tend to suppress their true emotions, and highlights the role of social norms in the romantic experiences of people in love. It characterizes the power of reason - that of pragmatism and idealism as standards for love and marriage (Lerner, 69). The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is not in the death of two young lovers, but the failure of society to overcome the social barriers that would have prevented the loss of so many innocent lives.
II. Lysander and Hermia demonstrate the beginning stages of love or passionate love. a. Shakespeare criticizes love from the viewpoint of Hermia’s father, Egeus as well as being challenged by society itself. b. The challenges of love are being portrayed when Hermia’s father, Egeus’s, refuses her to marry Lysander but Demetrius (Carter, 2).
However, another reason they decide is because they want to keep the power and want to be in control- this is also a very common theme in the play. The women can refuse to get married, but can risk being disowned by their family and technically being thrown out onto the streets, so it is safer not to refuse and go ahead with the marriage. In my opinion, the Elizabethan society is not fair because of the fact that women have no rights and are just used for whatever the men wish. However this is because I live in a society where equality is the key to peace and a country where women have been in charge. Although if I lived in the Elizabethan times then I would not know what my opinion would be, as to whether I would think it is normal or unfair.
Lord Capulet’s attitude just suddenly changed because he would rather have a great family reputation instead of his only daughter marrying her love. “Not proud you have, but thankful that you have. Proud can I never be of what I hate, but thankful even for hate that is meant love.” 3. What is the Nurse’s advice to Juliet? Why is this hurtful to her?
Robin Flores Professor Anderson English 103 25 October 2012 One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest One is to say, woman are portrayed inferior to men because they were never given a position of power, men see themselves superior than women, and are consider as sexual objects. The movie, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” shows the audience that women should stay in a patriarchy system. The female character Miss Ratchet, abused her power as a leader by being over dramatic on her job. The main character, McMurphy never agreed with Miss Ratchet on anything because he feels superior. Two other females that had nicknames are known as a sexual need in the film because McMurphy invited them over to seduce the guard and Billy.
Juliet shows her devotion to Romeo throughout the entire play. One example was when Juliet is confronted with her parents’ decision for her to marry Paris. She refuses to follow through with their command and says, “I will not marry yet; and, when I do, I swear, it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris.” These lines are ironic because she has already married Romeo and she loves him with an undying burning passion. Furthermore, when she chose to take the very dangerous potion that would make her fall into a very deep sleep, she was taking a huge risk. She was taking a very high risk in taking the potion because Friar Lawrence did not even know if it would work and she herself questions if he wanted to poison her.
This differs from how Lily acts because Lily relies on others to help make her happy. One of the reasons that June does not want to marry Neil is because she does not want to admit that she might actually need him. She is afraid of letting someone know that she needs them because the last time she fell in love he left her. “Ever since Melvin Edwards backed out of your wedding all those years back, you’ve been afraid of love, refusing to take a chance” (211). August knows that June is afraid to fall in love again because the last man that she fell in love with left her.
No; I have forgot that name, and that names woe” (2, 3, 44-46). This quotation is evidence that Romeo is very immature and does not truly know what love is, he claimed that he was in love with Rosaline a mere few days ago and was grieving over the love that she did not return. Therefore, his previous experience with Rosaline could perhaps forecast how he would have ended up feeling about Juliet as more time passed. Tybalt death is the result of immaturity and irrational thought on Romeo’s side. Romeo could have let the law take its course and execute Tybalt but instead he let his emotions get the better of him which is very childish.
There are many similarities to be drawn between the relationships of the protagonists and their spouses, but there also many differences. The traditional roles are reversed and ignored in the start of the play; opposed to Ibsen's A Doll's House (which is the reverse). It's hard to draw comparisons between Torvald and Macbeth, as they are very different characters. Though they are both ambitious, their roles and personalities differ greatly; where Torvald controls in his relationship, Macbeth submits. Shakespeare subverts gender roles like this throughout the play, such as when Lady Macbeth decides her husband is unable to commit the atrocities to sit on the throne and taunts him, insinuating things about his manhood and claiming he has "th' milk of human kindness" (Act 1, 5.15) implying that he isn't strong enough to kill King Duncan.
