Chiho Lee 7/24/2012 ESL 263 WA Most students from different countries in the United states, experience many hardships while learning English. Because of cultural differences between their home countries and United states, it is not easy to live in a different country. Food and different conversation styles make it difficult for students from other countries. Getting accustomed to new cuisine is a challenge for most people. In the article, "The Cooking Animal," the author Michael Pollan discusses that food represents who we are. Every country have different styles of cuisine. It is still difficult for me to get accustomed to English because there is no sense of superiority or hierarchy when speaking to elders or adolescents. On the other hand, Korean has a set rule of verbal communication where hierarchy and superiority are of most important. Since most Asian counties have long histories, people show respect through their speech by showing politeness. In conversation, there 's a difference between talking with older people and talking with the same age or younger people. If a person uses Non-verbal conversation to a older person in my country, the older man or woman will think of it as disrespectful because it is different from their expectations. According to an article "Friends and Strangers" the Author discusses that there's a misunderstanding for both parties, if there is a difference in expectation. Many Americans look at me in a weird way when I greet them in a verbal way. Greeting an elder in a verbal style is the Korean expectation and even to this day it is difficult to fix because that is the culture i was raised in. Also, when i handed my homework to teacher, i gave my homework with two hands. That too is the Korean expectation and is a must in the Korean society attempting to fix this cultural problem. I tried not to speak in verbal way or use two hands when handing something. However, I forgot to use the Korean way to my mother and she was furious. Lots of cultural differences exist in our lives.
