From fairy tale to scary tale, she now walked halls that were decorated with graffiti and dirty floors. Teachers did not receive the respect of a bow like in Korean schools. Kim states “The wealthier Korean immigrants settled in Westchester or Manhattan, attending private schools” (Kim, 2011). With little money she had to tend the public school, which made it difficult for her to relate to her ESL classmates (Kim, 2011). The purpose of Kim’s memoir was to communicate her story and to reveal the challenges as an immigrant of America.
Dear School board, I’m writing a letter about the proposed removal of junk food from school grounds. Junk food is available for purchase in a lot of schools, and students can easily buy them from the vending machines and in the cafeteria. However, some people feel that the school should remove junk food from school due to heath considerations, while other people think that the school should keep providing junk food. I’m writing this letter to tell you that I oppose the removal of junk food from school ground. First, I think providing junk foods in school gives students a variety of food choices.
There is a conflict with the language because the Mexican woman can’t speak English and when Flor talks to her, she has to get someone to interpret it for her. The relationship between these two families is tense and they had to be tolerant with communication. This was towards the Clasky family since the Moreno family knew very little English. The Moreno family also had to be tolerant with the Clasky family when they used their language (English) to communicate. Because of the language difference, conflict began between the two families.
The most importance cause of culture shock is the different language being used. As we know, there are more than 60 different languages in this world and each language has different dialect in difference place. To live in a new environment comfortably, one needs to have the ability of communicating easily with people around him. Language made it quite difficult to communicate. We may think that they can always use English to communicate around, but what will happen if one move to a country where the people there does not understand English.
(Paragraph 2) Kim noticed that in Korea school was different from American schools. She was now label Asian. But in Korea, Kim asserted that slippers were worn to keep the floor clean, when there graffiti on the walls of American school. Kim hoped to fine other friend that was of her race to make friend with, but it seem like that they had nothing in common, because they was poor. And they would call her F.O.B, they said she was fresh out the boat”, or yellow”.
I kept confusing the days of the week and forgetting there order. I was just a child, so it never occurred to me that I might have had a learning disability, and continued to struggle by myself in class. It was not until some time after my first year of schooling, that an elderly woman who worked in the school with children with disabilities approached me. She said to me, "Please sit down so we can get to know each other better". At first I did not know what to expect of her, and chose to listen to what she told me to do.
Independent Practice: Students will create a meal plan using grocery ads and finding food that follow the food pyramid. Have the students cut out their favorite foods from newspapers and magazines. Then let them write about their choices to show they understand each group's contents. They could also list things that are made from that product or other things made from the same basic contents. Students could also just cut out the names of products they like and have them draw the pictures on light colored construction paper for placemats.
3. The first generation that just arrived to the U.S. has a hard time adapting to the new environment. They must learn the language; eat the food they are not used to eating, and meeting new people and going to different schools and having different jobs. It is a process of adapting, decision on whether they want to forget where they came from and only acknowledge their host country, or keep their traditional ways. If a child was born in the U.S. and family is from Israel, the ones born in Israel are more likely to be deported.
More often than not, the food people eat, the friends they make, the politicians they vote for and the way they define themselves is directly related to their ethnicity. 2 Even where a family chooses to live, the ethnic background of their prospective neighborhood plays a vital role in influencing their decisions. The demographics of America are changing rapidly, but unlike previous times, new immigrants are more and more hesitant to assimilate. Many new families who have recently moved to America are wary of becoming “American.” But what exactly is “American” anymore? The term melting pot has been used for generations; it describes how many people from all over the world come to America, and combine their unique cultures and traditions with the cultures and traditions of
The transition from home to college is not only exciting but also overwhelming. College is a stressful time for many students. Not only do students feel academic pressures, but they also feel the pressures of autonomy, relationships, and social issues. With the increase of homework and pressure, students find themselves desperate for control over something in their lives: their bodies. “Restrictive eating is a way for students to have control over something when everything around them seems uncontrollable,” (Grassi 40).
