Name: Professor: Tittle: Date: The conflict between Clara and Esteban highlights the hidden features in their characters and helps the reader to understand them better. The two characters in the book, the house of the spirits, Clara and Esteban are not directly related at the beginning of the story. Esteban meets a beautiful young woman and is engaged to her. This woman happens to be Clara’s elder sister, Rosa. However, Rosa dies before they get married while her fiancée was away in the north. After sometimes, Esteban returns to the city because his mom was dying. He returns to the house of Dell Valle to see if they have another daughter that he could marry; he meets Clara, a charming but odd woman. They get engaged and agree to tie the knot. All goes on well, but this doesn’t last for long. Clara is not like any other ordinary women; she is a quiet person, and she grows up an odd woman with very few friends. During their engagement party, her pet collapses with a knife on his back. She can’t hide her love for Barrabas, the dog, he dies in her arms and stains her dress with much blood. Clara’s conflict with Esteban is witnessed during her second pregnancy when she announces she is expecting twins named; Jaime and Nicolas. Esteban is openly disappointed, reason being that Clara doesn’t name one of the twins after him. He goes to a brothel in town known as Christopher Columbus. Clara with her feminist character meets one person whom they become close friends with and that is Esteban’s sister, Ferula. She invites Ferula to move in with them in their family house that Esteban designed to look as European as possible. Esteban is like a proud man and a chauvinist who wants his wish to be done to the latter; this happens when Clara doesn’t name any of their sons after him. He walks away to a brothel possibly to pass the time and recover from the disappointment.
