There are a lot of things that occurred throughout our history that make us who we are. When it comes to women there are particular struggles that brought about pain and suffering such as the Salem witch trials. In order to fully investigate the depth of the blame that belongs on women we must answer the question ‘To what extent were the views on women responsible for the outcome of the Salem witch trials?’. This is evident in the treatment and actions of Penelope and Calypso.
I believe that this had a great impacted the society, mostly women. This was because women back in the 1800’s were only considered to be house wives, looking after the children, cooking for the family and cleaning their houses. Many women didn’t have the opportunity to do everything or even have everything that Marie did. Many of them couldn’t even go to school because they had to stay home to help their mothers with the house. Many men had an attitude of superiority and most women judged the women working in sciences negatively. However, there was some acceptance from men and women of females working in the scientific community. Women frequently were excluded by men from scientific study in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries because the attitude of the time was that women had only certain traits they could possess skill in, such as housework and beauty, and they lacked the intelligence to learn science. In document 3 Samuel Pepys, an Englishman, wrote in his personal diary that the Duchess of Newcastle, an author who wrote a book entitled "A World Made by Atomes", wished to be invited to the meeting of the Royal Society of Scientists. Women, were so unhappy without having rights and it made them feel less loved and wanted. With this theory being applied to this issue of Women’s Rights, they come out on top of the situation. It took 130 years or so for women to evolve in society. “Utilitarianism is a normative ethical theory that places the locus of right and wrong solely on the outcomes (consequences) of choosing one action/policy over other actions/policies. As such, it moves beyond the scope of one's own interests and takes into account the interests of others.” (Cavalier, 2002) With the Women’s Rights Movement, there were a lot of pros and cons that can about, mostly positives.
But others are like many of us, women working in the trenches of science, contributing to the enterprise of STEM in ways big and small. In the early years of the twentieth century, a few women were admitted to engineering programs, but they were generally looked upon as curiosities by their male counterparts. Today, you can find a woman or many women in STEM just about anywhere you look. Early, women are coxswained away from mathematics and science, so as they get older, many women do not even consider pursuing careers in engineering and science. Because of these conditions, all women in general are poorly represented in the technical fields.
