------------------------------------------------- The challenges of growing up The short story “The new girl” by Marc Mitchell is about a new girl who moves to a new street. The girl, who is black, seems to be sweet. Unfortunately, the girl Allison who also lives on the Street will not accept the new girl, because she has a different skin color. The narrator is in a difficult situation. On one hand, he wants to be friendly towards the new girl, but on the other hand, he is afraid to contradict Allison, who is two years older than he is. The pressure from Alison decides his choice. Twenty years later, he still has a guilty conscience. One of the big challenges with growing up is to not be accepted by children you want to play with or spend time with. It is hard when you are different by skin color, personality or even social status. When you are not accepted, it can make a big impact on how you turn out when you get older. Many people have a lot of mental problem because they were not accepted in their school amongst the children. Many children starts to be bullied when they are young and the bulling are stuck with them until they are over with high school. However, not just children bully each other. The bulling also exist among adults. Those adults are probably those who used to bully when they were younger. The parent have a big part in their child’s opinion about other people. Allison herd her mother talk about black people in a wrong way. However, it is not just the parents opinion that effect the children. It is also children among each other. When you hear one of your friends say something you automatically take it to you. You may not think about it when you are using it but it will be used by you. As when Allison said, “I don’t want that black girl anywhere near me” the narrator automatically said, “Niggers are stupid”. The narrator is not against the
