They felt as though the more abuse they gave, the more power they gained. However, some slaveholders become so obsessed with the thirst for power that their actions lead to the deaths of innocent people. The violent scenes that Douglass presents are nothing short of horrifying. He reveals that slaveholders often got away with murder with out any type of punishment or jurisdiction. An account of this is when a slaveholder by the name of Mr. Gore whipped his slave, Demby, to the point where he could not bear it.
This is an example of the violent danger that is associated with Abelard’s love for his daughter, In Oscar’s journey to search of romantic love, he repetitively falls under the deadly “Let’s-Be-Friend Vortexes” (Diaz 41), which leads to him acting violently toward others and himself. Oscar’s first act of violence occurs while dating his first love, Ana. Ana, while “supposedly” dating Oscar, has a boyfriend named Manny. Manny is known to “[smack] her…[kick] her…[call] her a fat twat”( Diaz 45). Oscar, being madly and blindly in love with Ana, takes his uncle pistol and contemplates about killing Manny.
Mira Nedd consistently pushes her daughter because she would like for her to be an example to her peers. Ona has ambitions of becoming a professional dancer but in this community dancing is taboo. There is evidence of this in the book when Mrs. Small introduces her class to dance during a lesson about different cultures around the world: “As thought introducing the girls to something illegal, Mrs. Small closed the door to the small arts room. Ignoring the heat from the scorching afternoon sun and the suffocating room, she played the records and enthralled the students.” (Foster, 57). Ona’s wishes are especially not welcome by her mother who frequently warns her of her past and a family curse which revolves around dance and adultery.

Another way in which masculinity is socially constructed is when viola decides to impersonate her brother Sebastian. She impersonates her brother in order to try out for the rival school’s soccer team and beat the team that didn’t let her try out. She completely transforms herself by changing her hairstyle, makeup, learning to walk, talk, and spit like a guy. It shows masculinity because if she wasn’t a guy they most likely wouldn’t have let her try out either. Once she’s at the new school as “Sebastian” her fellow teammates think she’s weird and awkward since she’s not a guy, which they obviously don’t know.
The Scarlet Letter is a novel with much symbolism. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the novel is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl, throughout the story, develops into a dynamic symbol - one that is always changing. Although Pearl changes, she always symbolizes evil. Pearl symbolizes evil in the story by representing God's punishment of Hester's sin, symbolizing the guilt and the scarlet letter that controls her behavior and defying Puritan laws by being cheerful and associating with nature.

In Linoleum Roses, Sally finally runs away from her abusive father by marrying an older salesman, whom she comes to find out is obsessive, abusive, and violent. Sally’s ‘husband’ doesn’t let her out, talk or see her friends, or be near the window. This vignette stood above the rest of the other gender role related vignettes because it showed how a women that has been in abusive situations tend to go in a circle to end in the same predicament they started in. that is exactly what Sally did, she left her abusive father to end up with an abusive old man. In Rafela Who Drinks Coconut and Papaya Juice on Tuesdays, the same concept is showed in a different light.
Medea, the protagonist of Robinson Jeffers' play of the same name, is a vengeful termagant, stricken with grief and wanting nothing but to vindicate Jason's deeds. To her credit, though, she is quite wily, and in possession of one of the most impressive acumen ever given to a character of her type. So deep is her animosity towards Jason that she goes to such lengths as parricide (killing her children, who are merely "pawns of her agony") to extract revenge on her former husband. She does not stop there, though. She despoils him not only of two children, but also of a wife, a father-in-law, and a kingdom.
