The two kids find shelter in the barn until morning being woken up by cowbells and the sound of animals running amongst them. They wake up to see a man “thin and tall, his neck bowed forward as if from years of ducking. The man's son has died from the war and he has lost his farm hand, and we can imply at the end of the story that the man is going to keep the youth as a slave and send Viticus far away. In this story, Ron Rash Does a great job of giving us a lot of information on what slaves went through by conveying this through the two boys. From being once a slave to escaping there workhouse and traveling day and night with little to no food, finding a new place to stay and trusting a family to take you in and allow you to live a normal life, and lastly leaving your family.
The town has live news so they are warned on what to expect. There were soldiers coming through their village and searching every house because they wanted to take young boys and recruit them. The family decided to go to Tepic where a house and job was set in stone for them and things would be more stable. They traveled there and slept one night at a very generous home until they were ready to head into Tepic. B) In the story Barrio Boy, Why does Ernesto’s mother take the piggy bank and wallet and place them in the hallow whole under the geranium planted in a five-gallon tin instead of taking both items with them to Tepic, and why does she have Ernesto help her trusting that he will not tell anyone about it?
As Terry continues with his supper, he is asked by his uncle what he’s been up to. They argue back and forth about his uncle going up to the attic to check out what he’s been doing up there. His uncle says he better not have been playing with matches up there. After supper, Terry’s uncle goes up to the attic and he is laughing in amusement as he came down the stairs. He says to his wife “You’d never guess what that kid has been doing up there!” After Terry’s uncle and aunt find what he has been doing, they both laughed at the fact that a boy was playing with paper dolls.
He considers carrying things through the streets undignified, and refuses to do it himself. On Christmas morning, Malachy and Frank attend Mass with their father and go to collect leftover coal strewn over the Dock Road so that their mother can cook the pig’s head. Pa Keating meets the boys on the street and convinces the landlord of South’s pub to give them a bag of real coal. They drag the coal home through the rain, passing cozy houses. Children laugh at them from inside the houses, taunting them and calling them “Zulus” because they are smeared with black coal.

One example of flashback as employed in the short story is a seven year old Thomas telling Victor a story of his father, who at the time resides at home. Thomas tells him, “Your father's heart is weak, he's afraid of his own family, he's afraid of you, (Alexie 61).” Yet in the film, we see the development of Arnold's character when by accident, he comes upon Thomas while he is off on a secret quest looking for a vision from the forefathers. Arnold laughs at the telling and takes him to Denny's for breakfast and then home to the reservation though he extracts a promise from Thomas to look out for Victor and to help him when needed. A second example of flashback inAlexie’s short story is at the age of ten, Victor asks Thomas to tell him a story after the fireworks show. Thomas responds with a tale of two boys wanting to be Indian braves.
Ashley Garrett Professor Martens English 009-2 October 2, 2012 Journal 4 In the movie Elf, buddy’s dad, Walter, is a workaholic. He always comes home late for dinner and always leaves before everyone in the house. In this movie Buddy was raised by Santa’s elves and later on found out that his real father lives in New York. Buddy then travels from the North Pole to New York and finally meets his father, who wants nothing to do with him. The essay, Company Man, relates to the movie Elf because a man, Phil, who works six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night.
The bell clanged early, and the kids all rolled out of their old stained bunk beds, scratched their fresh mosquito bites, and crawled to the dining hall. On each table were small boxes of cereal, enough for each kid to have one box, but not enough that everyone could have the brand of cereal he wanted. There were Fruit Loops and Cheerios, but also more than a few boxes of the deadly dark bran stuff consumed willingly only by old people suffering from constipation. On the second morning, when the breakfast bell clanged, a mad footrace ensued. Kids sprung from their bunks and shot from cabins in the New Hampshire woods to the dining hall.
The dog runs into the house. Phil follows as the dog jumps on the couch and rubs his nose on the pillows. Phil just looks at riley and shakes his head, proceeds to his bedroom where his dress blues are hanging on the doors he looks at his bed and lies down. He closes his eyes and his best friend Brady at boot camp along side of him at graduation day they look at each other and Brady says “Where do you think we will be a two years from now?” “I don’t know but hopefully not buried in the suck” “God I hope not” says Brady Phil and Brady have been best friends since joining the marines. When they found out they were being shipped over to Iraq together they were relieved to have someone they knew.
