D’Souza acknowledges that while there are many materialistic gains to be made in the American society the desire for immigration and the commonly held views of America has a more prominent reason, the American dream is a dream based on freedom. It is not necessarily a literal freedom from oppression but a freedom of choice, a freedom to create one’s own destiny. D’Souza’s most powerful and agreeable argument is that the Americans simply have a better standard of living in comparison to most countries. In many countries throughout the world living conditions cannot be changed. No amount of hard work or experience can change something that you were born into.

If we were asked to explain the contradiction between our beliefs and reality many of us would be hard pressed to do so without tracing back how we came to know and understand the American dream to begin with. The other songs were not so patriotic. Green Days song, “American Idiot,” is any thing but patriotic. They disagree and continually restate that they disagree with commercialism and the medias hold on America and the dreams that Americans have. This is clearly stated in the lines, “…Under the new media…” “…Television dreams of tomorrow” “…Now everybody do the propaganda” “…One nation controlled by the media.” The song “Amerika,” by Rammstein is against America in my opinion. It seems to me that they focus on the materialism that we have here in America and how we spread it all around the world where we influence.

As humans we are not defined by who we are currently but how we got there. If America wishes to continue being a prominent power it needs to start looking beyond its own borders and looks out into the ever changing world and coming to term with the fact that it is not exceptional. By admitting to ourselves that we not exceptional we will be in a better position to recognize our nation’s problems an address them, and it will also allow ourselves to better work with other countries around the world. Nationalism is not the same as exceptionalism. Loving something does not mean being blind its faults; rather it’s doing what you can to make that something reach its full potential. Thus the myth American exceptionalism must die for America to continue progressing in the new globalized
