Eventually, it would lead him to running away and attempting to escape this crooked society. Throughout the novel, Twain puts Huckleberry Finn into numerous accounts where he has to deceit the people he encounters to protect himself. Whether it was just changing his name, or completely disguising himself, Huck did what he had to do to survive. Huck “is reborn at almost every river bend, not because he desires a new role, but because he must re-create himself to elude the forces which close in on him from every side.” (Allingham 455) Early in the novel, Huck runs away from his father, Pap’s, cabin, and fakes his own death. Dead to everyone else who has known him, Huck leads a phantom existence.
Our Gang’s Dark Oath (pg 4) Tom Sawyer calls Huckleberry Finn out and they are almost caught by the slave Jim, who is famous “because he got stuck up on account of having seen the devil and been rode by witches” (6). Soon, Tom and Huck escapes and goes onto
Throughout the novel Jack starts to rebel and he becomes obsessed with hunting. Piggy’s glasses crack during a fight, and that’s when things start going downhill. Ralph still has control, and the conch possessed power. Soon after that Jack starts his own tribe on the other side of the island; the dark side. He is leader and there are no rules, just fun and games.
If Columbus had not taken the actions that he did, the people of the new world may have overthrown him and the western influence and that could have changed the world as we know it forever. This article provides a lot of information that can resolve the controversy over Western Civilization as a whole. Western Civilization is seen as a powerful influence filled with corruption and violence, but according to the article the West has been under attack for centuries. As stated, “Whether it was the Viking, Saracen, Magyar hordes plundering the Carolingian Empire, to Al-Qaida blowing up commutes in New York, Madrid or London.” This sentence shows that the West is only a superpower because it has faced so many obstacles and overcome them all. Everyone has such negative things to say about Western influence but if one of these outside forces overthrew Western Civilization, people would be saying the bad things about that society as well.
American culture has a long and rich history. This deep culture has been portrayed no better than in Mark Twain’s novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” This is a classic story of a young boy who must help an escaped slave flee his master, and by the end, discovers a few things about the world, and himself, along the way. There does exist, though, controversy surrounding the novel, mostly pertaining to its use of offensive language, the novel that has clouded its true meaning and purpose. Julius Lester and Kenny J. Williams both make arguments on whether or not the book should be taught to children. By how the story was interpreted, it is clear how the authors came to their respective conclusions.
Huck should have told the officials about the runaway slave, Jim, immediately as he found him. Yet throughout the story Huck grows a strong bond with Jim which is unheard of in those times. Jim gets taken and Huck debates on trying to save his friend or let a slave go rightfully. “All right then, I’ll go to hell” (Twain 214) This is one of the most powerful statements in the book because its Huck accepting the fact that he is willing to go to give up his immortal spirit in order to help his friend, Jim, and do what is right. Huck completely now views Jim as more than just property, but as a person.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was highly controversial although not immediately after it was written. It was published in 1884 and caused little controversy until in 1955, when a televised version of the book used a white man to play Jim, Huck’s slave. They also eliminated any mention of slavery from the show, proving that the book was not well received. Among numerous other complaints, in 2009 a Washington high school teacher requested for the removal of the novel from their school curriculum, mainly because of the use of the word ‘nigger’. So many protests were received that an alternate book was released, called The Hipster Huckleberry Finn which replaced the word nigger with hipster.
When Huck almost sells Jim out, it is a constant internal battle between Huck’s heart and society. Under no circumstances would I consider Mark Twain to be racist. Mark Twain may use the word “nigger” often, but he creates these racist comments as satires to ridicule society during these times. He uses one of the best works of art to show how life was at one point and to remind future generations how depressing it was for black people in the South during the 1800’s. Twain is like Huck Finn in the aspect that they grew up in racist environments and eventually realized society was wrong for what they were doing.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn centers on the life of a young boy living in the United States. He loves to get dirty, and hates dressing correctly and acting “sivilized”, (as he calls it), and despises going to school. His adventures begin when his father comes back to town and kidnaps him. He manages to escape by staging his own murder and leaving his father behind after finding a canoe floating down the river. He eventually meets a salve he knew who was sold to someone else, who joins him on his journey.
Even though the names and roles of the political parties were changed throughout time, they still divided and created turmoil because of the competition between them. This issue was foreseen by the first president George Washington. He even warned about it by writing it in his Farewell Address to America (cite) yet despite of his warning they instead continue with the political parties. Those parties became the Republican Party in the North and the Democratic Party in the South. There were many differences between the two and each difference created more and more tension until they reached the breaking point of war.
