The Advantages of participating in team sports For this essay I chose to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of participating in volleyball. I chose this topic because I played volleyball in middle school and in high school and I got to see what the benefits of playing on a volleyball team are first hand. Some of the advantages are as follows; you build teamwork, in order to be part of a good team you have to be able to work together. You learn self-discipline, to be a conditioned player you have to eat right, get the right amount of sleep and exercise regularly. By getting regular exercise you reduce your chances of illness and disease such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. You get a sense of self-importance or confidence. In playing volleyball there is a lot of social interaction, this helps build relationships for the future. I enjoyed my time on the team because I made lifelong friendships. I also learned how to be a part of a “family” even if it wasn’t a blood family. That is something that you cannot learn from a book or a movie. With all of the advantages there are some disadvantages which are as follows: there is a lot of pressure to not only preform on the court but to also preform academically. This can be a challenge with the vigorous practice and game schedule. Some teachers may even let you slide when it comes to pulling your weight if you are a “star” player which only hurts you in the long run. You also sharpen your hand eye coordination. However with all of the advantages there are some disadvantages. Let’s discuss some of those as well. Of course there are the injuries. Some of those may be over use or cumulative injuries, which start out as only aches and pains but can become debilitating injuries without early treatment. This includes tendinitis, arthritis, muscle strain and low back pain. Just to name a few. Then
