The social dynamics of school, puberty, life at home, and many other factors affect the psyche of teens during this time in their life both positively and negatively. Some of these transitions cause emotional instability in the lives of adolescents, spiraling some into depression. When dealing with major depression, antidepressants are often used to help the adolescent cope by creating a feeling of balance. There is debate on adolescents using antidepressants. Stephen Barlas reports in Psychiatric Times that antidepressants are found to cause “possible suicidal ideation and suicide attempts as side effects” (2006).
Children who have parents that abused drugs or alcohol are at a much higher risk of becoming addicts. Research has shown that alcoholism in particular has a very strong genetic factor. A parent who is permissive about substance abuse is likely to send a message to their children that this kind of behavior is alright. Most children feel that if their parents do it, it must be acceptable (“ Children of Addict Parents”, 2005).
Level 3 CYPW-SC Unit 62 Assignment- Understand the issues affecting young people in relation to sexual health and risk of pregnancy 1.1 Pregnancy- Teenage pregnancy is a serious social problem and a key inequality and social exclusion issue. Having children at a young age can damage young women's health and well-being and severely limit their education and career prospects. While individual young people can be competent parents, all the evidence shows that children born to teenagers are much more likely to experience a range of negative outcomes in later life. Children born to teenage parents are also much more likely, in time, to become teenage parents themselves. While the negative consequences of teenage pregnancy are felt most by young women and their children, it is important that strategies to reduce teenage pregnancy also impact on young men's attitudes and behavior.

It is important to focus attention on adolescence smoking behavior because “adolescence is the period in which many youngsters begin to experiment with substance such as smoking” (Harakeh, Scholte, Vermulst Hein de Vries & Engels, 2010, p. 141). Considering the effect of smoking on lives of young adolescences it is evident that there is a need to critically conduct studies on the main prevention concepts to smoking initiation in youths. “Social Influences are assumed to be one of the core concepts in extensive list of risk and protective factors ” (see Petraitis et. al. (year) , as cited in de Leeuw, Scholte, Harakeh, van Leeuw & Engels, 2008).
Peer pressure, curiosity, and the availability of drugs are factors that some youthful and vulnerable teenagers have to deal with in their adolescent lives. One of the significant reasons of teenage drug use is peer pressure, particularly from the social influences among friends, acquaintances, school, and the community. Depending on the person’s experiences and choices, circumstances and consequences may vary. If a teenager’s social main group is using drugs, then there may be a strong pressure due to the fact that drugs are present and can easily be offered. Also, the person might get convinced to think that there is nothing wrong with trying drugs because “everybody else is doing it.” In the effect that teenagers will try drugs just to fit in the social norms, they might do it to impress their buddies to be considered "cool" as part of being in the group and gain acceptance by friends.
