American Popular Music Assignment #3 May 11, 2015 Music from the 70’s The decade of the 70’s seemed to be an incredibly fun and eye opening time for youth and musicians alike. This decade of indulgence and experimentation gave way to a multitude of choices for music fans around the world, especially in Europe and United States. To choose only three different types of music from this amazing time in our history is a little difficult. I consider my music taste to be eclectic, and I try to keep an open mind. That being said, I would have to say if I grew up in the 70’s that my three choices for different types of music would probably be; Progressive Rock, Southern Rock, and Afro-Centric Funk. The progressive rock bands I probably would…show more content…
This album was a Landmark progressive album, and still is considered an outstanding hit. There are several songs from this album that really strike me as creative timeless hits. Three of my favorite songs from this album are; “Breathe”, “On the Run”, and “Money”. Their ability to use new and unique instruments for the time, to convey the storyline of life is incredibly thrilling to me. The songs feel very poetic for me, and have a certain timeless energy about them. The last band from this group that I would have listened to is Black Sabbath. Some of my favorite songs from this band are; “Iron Man”, “Paranoid”, and “War Pigs”. They are great musicians, and make great music videos as well. The last on my list of southern rock songs is “Can’t You See” by Marshall Tucker Band. The song is very easy to relate to, with its theme of “what that woman has done to me”. The song has been on many top ten lists since it came out in 1977, and for good reason. For the last genre of music I chose Afro-Centric. The reasons I chose Funk is because of the underlying themes of unity and togetherness. The main attraction for me is with the band George Clinton/Parliament Funkadelic. They had an uncanny ability to fuse jazz, rock, and soul music. This, along with their “out of this world” presence and elaborate stage shows made them famous for decades to come. In addition they created a means to escape the hostile environment through musical expression and open mindedness. One of my favorite songs of Parliament is “Flashlight”. It is incredibly catchy, fun, and upbeat. Their fun and creative album art would have drew me in to checking them out as well. Even though it came out a few years later in 1982, their song “Atomic Dog” has always been a favorite, and was even voted as our school song in 1997. All in all, this era ushered in new and creative music genre’s and elaborate shows and costumes to match. What a great
