Mount Cristo Rey Dedicated to Christ, Mount Cristo Rey stands atop the Sierra de Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, New Mexico. This 29 foot statue, made of limestone, serves as a shrine to thousands of faithful people in the El Paso and Southern New Mexico area. World famous sculptor, Urbici Soler, had this masterpiece ready for Roman Catholic pilgrimage on October 29th, 1939. To this day many people embark this journey to honor God, signifying a pilgrimage. The annual pilgrimage is held on the last Sunday of October each year. This pilgrimage celebrates the anniversary of the completion of the monument and the date was chosen to coincide with the Christian feast of Christ the King. This year was the 73rd annual pilgrimage. It has been estimated that up to 40,000 people attend this pilgrimage each year. Many of the faithful attend annually while others decide to go on this journey for the first time. Some people decide to make this five mile journey barefooted or even on their knees. Many returning pilgrims still declare their bewilderment of the beauty of the monument and the view given by the summit. Fourteen crosses are stationed up the mountain to the statue depicting Christ carrying the Cross to his crucifixion. Believers pray and worship Christ as they travel up to the top of the mountain. Statues of some saints and the Virgin Mary are also located on the trail to the Cristo Rey monument. People also pray to the saints and worship the Virgin Mary. Offerings such as flowers or plants are taken to the Virgin Mary statues. Candles are lit and offered to Christ on a designated space in front of the monument. Atop the Sierra de Cristo Rey Mountain people gather around and marvel at the statue. Kneelers have been placed at the base of the monument for the faithful to kneel and pray to Christ. The faithful stand in awe and realize what Christ did for them.
