Texting While Driving Using a cell phone while driving, whether talking or texting, is a danger not only to yourself but the people surrounding you. Many drivers today have busy lives and never have time to get the things they need to do completed on time. This leaves them to get things done while on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driving and texting is six times more dangerous than driving intoxicated. Since many people have gotten away with it so many times they feel that it’s all right and nothing bad will happen but that’s not always the case. When people text and drive all of their attention is now taken away from the road and put on their phone. People claim that it is easy for them to use their phone and drive, but when you are sending a text message, it’s not possible to look in both directions at once. Sometimes, the people get very engaged in the text such that they momentarily forget that they are driving. According to the government, in 2009, 5,474 lives were taken and 448,000 people got injured from car accidents from being distracted while driving. Sadly, it is those few seconds of distraction that have cost several individuals their lives. Many countries have passed laws forbidding messaging while driving. Even with these laws and law enforcement striving to make sure everybody follows them, everybody has to do their part and actually follow them. Parents could set a good example for their children and show them that it is not safe to text and drive. Usually teenagers try to be rebellious and the best thing to do is for the parents to confiscate the phone and punish them so they will learn that there are consequences.
