Themes Violence * Terry is ordered to call out Joey Doyle to participate in murder. * Johnny Friendly and his mob use violence to corrupt and scare the longshoremen. * The mob raid the church where Father Barry was trying to get the longshoremen to confess about what was happening down at the docks. * The death of Dugan was resulted for telling the truth to Father Barry. * Charlie was killed because of Terry's decision. * Father Barry punched some sense into Terry because he wanted to murder Johnny Friendly for the death of his brother. * Terry and Johnny fought at the docks to see who had more power. Joey's death lead her to pursue the cause of his death, because of this both Edie and Terry met. Edie's naivety didn't know any better that Terry was a member of the mob and she trusted him. However Terry didn't want to tell the truth which could've hurt her, emotionally and physically. As the film progressed, Edie wants to run away with Terry and forget about everything happening. Terry on the other hand, wants to seek justice for his brother's and everyone who was killed by the mob's death. * Father Barry and Terry are a couple who both have a relationship mid way of the film. Terry didn't know what to do about participating in the death of Joey Doyle, so he had to result in telling Father Barry about what happened and who was involved. Father Barry's support helped Terry carryon throughout the film. By the end of the film, Father Barry was a father figure to Terry. Struggles * Edie and Pop both have to suffer the death of Joey Doyle. * Father Barry struggles to speak up for the longshoremen to confess about what is happening down at the docks. * Terry's conscience start to emerge, he questions whether he should confess about the death of Joey Doyle. * Pop Doyle wants to protect and Edie and wants her to pursue educating and not know anything about the docks. * Charlie struggles to constantly take care of Terry and in the end dies in the result of doing so.
