. ‘That left me, at thirteen, the head of the household’. Walls thought she was able to handle to the family and her father when her mother was away. She took care of the family and bought food and handled the money, but soon she realized that her father was always asking for money, money for cigarettes and alcohol. ‘“You can’t just live like this”, I said.
Teenage years are a complex time of physical and emotional metamorphosis during which the youth feels estranged from the self the child had known. It is a time of seeking one’s niche in life and to build everlasting relationships that eventually support an individual during both teen and adult years. These relationships greatly influence teenagers’ mental health that is their happiness, self-esteem, and ability to work. But as teenagers instigate themselves in bonding with others they confront numerous social and family issues, some of which strengthen their connection with others and some debilitate their existing relationships. Mary Lawson’s novel, Crow Lake is a literary demonstration of these relationship issues that teenagers face in their
In today’s modern and fast paced society, teenagers have had to rush through life and begin adulthood earlier than the generations before. Many teens have also been expected to make this step in life without the help of a parent or mature adult, because they are too busy with their own lives. The media has replaced parents’ jobs of teaching their children about life, and the media surrounds teens with mature themes which affect teenagers in a negative way. Many teenagers have lost a section of their lives by having to skip to adulthood where they are unprotected from many negative parts of this world. I agree with David Elkind that “teenagers have lost their privileged position” and that unlike generations of teenagers before, this generation
These two causes may also lad to the rise of the problem. To begin with, I totally agree that lack of education may lead to alcohol abuse. In Mindy Sink’s article, she mentions that kids are away from home for the first time and not taught to drink responsibly. Parents and schools play an important role in educating their children and students. Since teenagers are immature to make their own decision, it is vital for adults to inculcate a correct attitude towards drinking.
Jenna’s mother and her get into arguments over Jenna asking her mother to watch her son. Jenna has to pay for daycare after school for him while she is at work and has little money to pay for additional daycare when she would be at college classes. Her mother says that she has raised her children and does not believe that she should have to help her daughter because she received no help with her children. Jenna has a 17 year old sister who does help with watching her son, but Jenna also feels guilty always having to ask her and has no money to pay her to watch her son. Jenna and her sister are close, her sister plans on attending college at the end of her senior year and wants to study to become a doctor.
This type of thinking can eventually change your outlook on life, and might get you in trouble in the long run. For instance; you do not think for yourself anymore, you are thinking about what others want you to be, not who you are. My father told me that you do not need to look popular to be popular, it’s your attitude and outlook on life, not your clothing. It’s so sad to see young girls trying to fit in with the older crowd. Teenagers should enjoy their teen life and not try to grow up so fast.
These children may leave home with the intent of living successful lives, but may soon find out that hardships come along and divert their plans. “Young adults are taking longer to start acting like adults” (Feldman, 2014, p 451). “It is also understood that recent economic circumstances, such as the high cost of living and high youth unemployment rates, have made living away from home more difficult (Mitchell & Gee, 1996) and perhaps have resulted in greater acceptance of returns under certain conditions” (Mitchell & Gee, 1996). One of the reasons that boomerang children return home is due to economic problems. They leave home and find that living life away from home is costly and most of them are working for
If teenagers want to start acting like adults, they should be treated as one. Juveniles have to learn from their mistakes and leaving them in the slammer for longer than when they turn 18 would make them learn. Most teens that commit a heinous crime then get released from juvenile hall are more than likely to bounce back to their old ways. It will only get worse. It has been studied before, that older gang members use younger teens to sell drugs and do other gang-related activities for them because they know teens won’t get as big of a punishment as adults.
The youngest child is starting school next fall and Lisa is planning on going back to work at that point. After the youngest child was born Lisa and her husband wanted to get a permanent sterilization procedure but their health insurance plan does not cover permanent methods of contraception and only covers certain types of oral contraception. Unable to cover the cost of the procedure Lisa and her husband decide on the oral contraception to prevent any further pregnancies. Lisa was really busy with a household of sick children and in that week forgot to take her pill two days in a row and ended up getting pregnant again. Lisa and her husband love being parents but are financially strapped and can not afford anymore at this point.
More and more teens are becoming pregnant when living the “party life.” It increases the chances of forgetting to use protection during intercourse. This can lead to unwanted pregnancy and an increase of abortion rates or unwanted pregnancies. It is a sad life for kids who are born into a world and left to a foster home or an adoption agency. There are many teens that just simply can’t afford to keep their child, so they just put them up for adoption. Adoption is not a bad thing, but there are plenty of kids in the world already, and we don’t need teens producing more.
