With the recurrent expansion of scientific knowledge and technology in today’s society, new inventions, theories, and ideas are frequently brought into practice. All though new technologies and advancement in understanding of the world around us is crucial to scientific expansion, the outcomes of these ideas aren’t always positive. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the original practices of Eugenics both serve as correlations to vast and ever-growing scientific universe. These two works can be related in their ability to serve as sources of caution during innovation of science. Nevertheless, both Frankenstein and Eugenics can also be dissimilar from that of one another.
The Dumbest Generation Since the beginning of time resources for knowledge has excelled and advanced. Throughout generations technology has grown along with the human mind set, but due to this growth many would call today’s generation lazy or incompetent for having resources at their fingertips as Mark Bauerlein wrote in the excerpt “The Dumbest Generation”. Being a part of the dumbest generation I would disagree. Today’s generation is more intelligent and more open minded than generations previously due to the advantage of technology and the creativity being shared around the world along with having more opinionated voices that can be shared . In the article Shirky establishes the point that we are now going through a similar growth in our publishing capability as we had in our past. This capability, according to Shirky, enables us to create new “education resources” such as Wikipedia and Patients like Me. The article also shows how there is much nonsense out there and points towards further historical references of people who were against the widespread availability of knowledge, such as Edgar Allen Poe and Martin Luther King Jr. Yet this article goes on to say that these “pessimists'” awe of the past was unfounded, compared to the present in which people went towards pointless content as well if not more. Shirky points out that in the end the increase in the freedom and availability to make content is a positive change even though it comes with “dumb videos and erotic novels” (Shirky).
While his practices were eventually made illegal in many cases, it is undeniable that his domination of the oil industry increased its efficiency, safety, and stabilized its market price. In my opinion, because of the many companies that were eliminated by Rockefellers practices, laws like the Sherman Act in many ways did serve the public good. While on some levels I respect his business acumen, it was certainly not good for a a you company to make the backroom deals that unfairly drove many entrepreneurs to ruin. Undoubtedly, one must also take into consideration the fact that the growth of industry taking place was unprecedented in human history. Never before had technology, transportation, and communications come together to allow for such exponential growth on a global scale.
From the first automobile to the first cell phone, technology is a never ending mechanical and scientific evolution that is designed to benefit us and make life easier. Every day we rely on technology to help us achieve our goals quickly and efficiently while using the least amount of energy we possibly can. There is an extremely large dependence on these technologies and their functionality. This dependence and reliance on the constantly growing technological advancements around us is argued by some as harmful and dangerous, ultimately becoming damaging. “Into the Electronic Millenium” Sven Birkerts Most individuals, if not the world, may consider technological innovations and advances to be a beneficial aspect in our contemporary society. However, according to Sven Birkerts in his article, “Into the Electronic Millennium,” the assimilation of technology into our society has only affected us negatively. On one hand, the usage of these modern gadgets has caused detrimental effects to our daily language, altering the way we speak and communicate for the worse. On the other hand, such electric components have also provoked a loss of value for privacy as well. In accord with Birkerts ideals, I too, agree in the detrimental effects evoked from such technological advances.
I believe radiation is slowly changing the world as we know it. Although it can be harmful or even deadly; scholars have come to recognize that the benefits greatly outweigh any contributing negative factors. Studies involving radiation have already brought so many more solutions into the equation, cancer being the largest on the scale. Further studies will hopefully shed more light on the unknown and provide us with even more treatment types. Only time will tell, but we are constantly on a hunt for knowledge, so I believe radiation will continue to play a major role in our world’s future

Are We the Dumbest Generation? Adults often argue that the intellectual ability of today’s generations has taken a turn for the worst due to the amount of technology they are exposed to as they develop mature ideals. English professor Mark Bauerlein examines in his 2008 book the effects of digital media and how it has caused young people to be more connected and technologically savvy as a result of the wide range of modern inventions, but he also asserts that this has caused them to become less intelligent; therefore, he presents the modern ages as the Dumbest Generation. Young people have a tremendous amount of information available to them due to technology through social networks, the internet, and video games. Many respectable individuals discuss on whether to call the modern generation the “dumbest generation” (Bauerlein) or realizing that they might be participating in an intellectual revolution.
