Technological Advancements During WWII

World War II was a time of technological advancement. The need for increased transportation, ease of mobility, and innovative attacks on enemies led to the development of many new and revolutionary technologies. These new innovative advancements, specifically weapons, greatly influenced the way war was fought and ultimately allowed for the end of the war. Initially, combat in WWII was fought with armed men on horses, trenches, and battleships from World War I. WWII lasted from 1939-1945 and within that time frame, revolutionary weapons such as jets, ballistic missiles, and atomic weapons were created to ease combat demands. Air military strength became one of the most important elements of the war. Aerial bombing became increasingly popular among politicians and military leaders because it was not as messy as trench warfare. At the start of the war, Western Europe, especially France, lacked air power and, therefore, were more vulnerable to Germany’s air raids. Jets were introduced later into the war by the Germans. Many of these new aircrafts and jets were created in secrecy because the Treaty of Versailles, previously established, restricted the development of aircraft for war from the Germans. Another important weapon that arose from this period were specific military vehicles and ships such as submarines, aircraft carriers, and tanks (also secretly designed by the Germans). Aircraft carriers allowed airplanes and jets to be moved across the sea and submarines allowed for better mobility and stealth underwater. Submarines were vital to operations in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. Submarines sunk supply merchant fleets and war ships, which ultimately prevented countries, like Japan, from replacing lost aircrews and allowing the navy to stray far from its oil supply. The Germans also created U-boats whose goal was to stop or destroy traveling resources
