Teacher Centered vs. Student Centered Angie Jackson American College of Education Lumpkin (2007) explains how caring teachers build relationships with their students. They believe in each student’s ability to achieve and shape the teaching-learning process by placing the learner at the center. She also states that effective teachers actively engage students’ mind while transferring to them greater responsibility for their learning. Before I began observing my own classroom, I assumed I was on the road towards having a student centered classroom; student were actively engaged in their work, they were having great conversations, and they were meeting expectations of the teacher. “My expectations” was the one thing which changed my thoughts. Amongst the fifteen factors of the cognitive and metacognitive factors, I only observed about half of the factors within my classroom. When teachers genuinely care, students sense it and respond by optimizing their commitment to learning and putting forth greater efforts to reach their potential (Lumpkin, 2007). There is truly an environment where the students are aware of the expectations of their teacher and they are eager to please her because of the genuine love she shows them. However, in order to create an environment where students are the focus there has to be a lot of changes. Learner-centered teaching strategies are those that focus instruction on the needs, preferences, and interests of the learner. Teachers act as facilitators of the learning process, providing direction and feedback rather than just instruction. Learning activities emphasize cognitive processes that prompt learners to construct new meanings from the information they acquire. Students are given multiple opportunities to discover knowledge and practice skills in an environment designed to appeal to them. During the discussion board
