Through Introduction to Women’s Studies, I've come to learn about and better value women’s lives. Specifically, perspectives on women’s lives before feminism came into play, the historical development of feminism, how it relates to the politics of work and family, health and sexuality, and feminist visions and strategies. I have an opportunity as a young woman. In this memoir I share a moment of excitement and engagement that will always remain important to me. I tell the story of my tattoo - what it means to me, what it means to be a woman with a tattoo and the history of tattoos. This paper argues that commercialized beauty – plastic beauty - is not only a system of control, but a way society silences women. It highlights “the rebellious use of tattoos as a form of radical feminist self-identification”. (Megan Jean Harlow, 2009). Through this memoir, I hope other individuals better understand what it means for women to have a tattoo and how it relates to gender, women and sex. I've personally found it strange there are so many negative perceptions about women and tattoos. He states that he is “technically a white, male, heterosexual, Christian, upper-class Ph.D. student. But I am more than meets the eye”. (Strohecker). He is covered in tattoos and piercing which usually means it leads to preconceived assumptions about his character. People judge him without even knowing who he is. In the article he states that he “hopes to debunk some of the myths surrounding tattoos and piercings. And I know that everyone who interacts with me is left wondering how someone so ‘deviant-looking’ can be kind, courteous and hospitable”
