Under the medical model, disabled people are defined by their illness or medical condition. The medical model of disability says people are disabled by their impairments or differences. Under the medical model, these impairments or differences should be fixed or changed by medical and other treatments, even when the impairment or difference does not cause pain or illness. The medical model looks at what is 'wrong' with the person and not what the person needs. It creates low expectations and leads to people losing independence, choice and control in their own lives.
The practice of multiculturalism gives uniqueness and an essential component to benefit the country such as good public relationship. Apparently, multiculturalism is not possible without the participation and engagement of the people. Therefore, the practice of multiculturalism must be actively advocated and enhanced among the community. The world is changing rapidly, and it is very important for Americans to accept multiculturalism as an irreversible part of the United States. The country has a lot of different cultures.

This can also refer to “nature vs. nurture” because self-identity can be achieved by being nurtured by loved ones and encouraged in everyday life by people that love them. What are the advantages and disadvantages of viewing counselor professional identity as “created in individual practitioners by the demands of local counseling environments” (p. 104)? There are so many intricacies involved in the process; nevertheless, people are the most important element in creating justice for all, regardless of social status, color of skin, English language barriers, and cultural background (Theoharis, 2009). My major focus as a SJL is to empower and cultivate in my DACC colleagues in the advising center a passion for our students. A deep understanding of our students needs is essential in order to cooperate, and work together with a heartfelt passion to build a strong community college that practices equity and accessibility. By building strong relationships with our students and their families we can create a climate of belonging. While mental illness has nothing to do with intelligence, mental retardation refers to subaverage intelllectual functioning. A person with mental illness may be very confident socially but may have some type of character disorder.
